22 WSM pan clearance

Does the 22" pan have clearance issues with the charcoal? If so, has anyone found a shorter pan to replace it with?

I will not be using water so capacity is not an issue. I might replace my grill straps so that I have three racks with more room.

If you get a new wsm the water pan is no problem at all.

An older model will have a deeper pan that some dont really like. But i think most will say get a brinkman water pan to replace the old deeper one.

Does the brinkman water pan fit the 22" ? I thought it was for the 18". I am getting a 22 in a couple weeks and I am going to try and get all the modifications done while it's clean.

I have the old shallow weber pan in my 18".

The water pan in the new 22 WSM has no issues with clearance.

From what I understand, it is the water pan in the new 18 WSM that has a deeper pan and can cause some clearance issues.

The Brinkmann Charcoal pan will not fit in the new 22 WSM.

The 22.5" water pan is an 18.5" lid kettle lid.
the 18.5" original water pan was a 14" kettle, smokey joe lid. Newer versions use the 14" bowl.

Some people have had clearance issues with the additional depth of the newer pan, some haven't. some say potato, some say potatoe.

I agree. I have an 18 and the pan is a bit deep. I will continue to watch this post for ideas.

I went out and took this photo of a recent (AA date code - 2011) 22" WSM with a fully loaded charcoal ring (butt going on tonight). The white charcoal bag was inserted for contrast.

In my opinion, I wouldn't say there was a clearance issue. But I'm not using the 11" briquettes, either.

John,

Thanks for the pic, but I had already dropped it 3 inches by the time I saw your post.

The 3 inches allowed me to comfortably add a middle rack for more butts. Now I can fit 4x 10# per rack x 3 racks = 12 !
