1996 Genesis 5000 LP

Hello!

I am beginning a restoration of a 1996 Genesis 5000 LP. The hood is grey with maroon pinstriping. it is in rough shape, but will be great when finished.

The good: the firebox and hood are in great shape. The grey wood slats are made of wood, and should revive nicely with some sanding and refinishing. All of the side tables, with appropriate hardware, are present and accounted for. The wood handle is is good shape also. Two of the three glass doors are in place, and the side burner is solid.

The bad: the front cross support and panel on the cart are completely roached out. The firebox needs a very thorough cleaning, and the sides of the hood need to be painted. Some of the z brackets are rusty, but seem to be solid. The middle glass door is missing. The bolts fastening the burner to the firebox are rusted and stuck. Not sure how I am going to get them out. The flavorizer bars need to be replaced.

Any comments and suggestions are welcome. Here is a picture when I got him home:

I restored a 1992 Redhead Genesis last year with help from this forum. I look forward to learning more about these beautiful grills from all of you.

Thanks!
Nicole

My Genesis 1100 had the gray-painted wood slats too. I found the wood to be extremely light and soft and that cutting down a new cedar 1x2 was far more efficient than sanding down all the existing slats.

It all depends. I will be refinishing the wood on my Redhead, but I have a bench mounted belt sander. I can do them all in about 15 minutes.

Oh, a belt sander would be nice! I did all the slats on my Redhead last year with a palm sander. It took awhile, but the wood was good. This wood looks a bit different. Good suggestion on using cedar 1x2's.

About getting the old burner out, after doing a bit of reading last night, I am not sure I need to remove those bolts. Removing the manifold allows those burner tubes to slide out ... Yes? (I ask hopefully:-) )

Got them out. Cleaning the firebox and sides of hood, and will repaint the outside in the morning. Using 0 steel wool, and it seems to be taking the corrosion off nicely.
