0000 Steel Wool on Performer & Genesis Side Tables?

Has anyone used steel wool to bring the Weber thermoset side tables back to life?
I have seen how nice it cleans up the old kettles and wsm's, but is it safe for the plastic?
 
I've cleaned quite a few plastic tables of late and use this process. I soak them overnight in a tub with soapy (dawn) water. Then hit the surfaces with a scrubbie and they come out looking like new. Simple Green, Eazy Off, blah, blah, blah. I haven't found a spray-&-wipe that works like the soaking method.
