    i've smoked on my performer several times and never had any problems. does the extra hole let in extra air? of course. but it's not so much extra air that your temps will run away.

    did you have the lid open or something? i grill bacon (regularly) and don't even have a flare up until i open the lid to remove the bacon.

    did you chip off the porcelain? the porcelain coating (if any) seems really thin on mine i haven't used anything abut a wire brush, and even then i use it lightly.

    pretty sure it's made from the same glass enforced nylon that the handles are made. a piece of crazy hot metal will melt it. a pan of rice will not.

    keep in mind it's an 18, not a 22. jumbo joes all had that rib didn't they? also, i have a smokey joe that has the rib as well. if it was a 22 with the rib, i'd say it's a sears or a happy cooker or something. but it's an 18. there are a few oddities though. the unbranded vent on the lid...
