HM version 4 Rpi 3d print case

Two of these should do it. Or you could just get one 40 pin and cut to fit. Remember, even though the LCD connection has 16 pins, the center 4 are not used, only the 6 outermost on each end.

    ET-72/73 vs ET-732 Probes

Smoker and food probes are electrically the same, the difference is in shape so that's up to you and how you mount them. The last 732 order I got from Maverick had what they called a food/smoker probe in it, it did not have the 90 degree bend in it and the one end was pointy.

HM version 4 Rpi 3d print case

You can screw the display to the case or the ribbon hods it in place just fine, no shorting. The right angle header is required, 2 6 pin iirc.

HM version 4 Rpi 3d print case

Go back and take a look at post 279. The display can screw to the case or as you can see in that pic, the ribbon cable can hold it in place.

HM version 4 Rpi 3d print case

No issues at all, just have to use a ribbon cable or solder wires.

HM version 4 Rpi 3d print case

Thanks! Got it from eBay, here's a link. Matt made the case and Tom makes them too, just be sure they know about which display you use. http://www.ebay.com/itm/20x4-2004-Character-LCD-Module-HD44780-GR-YL-Backlight-Ships-from-USA-/161022269711?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item257dacd90f

HM V5? Total cost to build HM?

That one may work but it's pretty expensive. This one works fine in a case that Matt made for me and like the one you mentioned, you will need a cable. I have modified floppy or IDE cables and they work great, just use 90 degree header pins on the HM board instead of straight ones. Or you can...

    ET-72/73 vs ET-732 Probes

The jacks are the same although the ones on the parts list don't have end stops so if you push them in past the 1st's click, they won't make contact. I used different jacks that I got off ebay. It's not that big of an issue, someone also had a good idea to put a piece of tubing on the plug to...

    Pellet smokers

As for Weber mods, check this page about 3/4 the way down. This is a pellet hopper conversion by smoke daddy. I personally think that a heatermeter with a pellet system would be the best of everything, complete control, burning real wood, and ability to cook as long as needed without having...

    New start up issues

And you have the display oriented so that the connector is in the upper left of the display with pin 1 on the left?

    New start up issues

Which LCD module are you using again? And hos is it connected? A pic may help.

    New start up issues

That's great news! Are the LEDs behaving normally now?

    New start up issues

Maybe verify that the Atmel is seated properly and that none of the pins missed the socket?

    New start up issues

Images are a little hard to see but everything i could make out looks ok, are all the legs on the shift register soldered ok? I don't see solder on one pin.

Alternate parts and sources (for RPi and Heatermeter 4.0)

Whish I could find the part number but i used these instead. Again, i bought about 50 off eBay and they were originally a Mouser part. I like them because unlike the ones on the part list, these have end stops in them so you can't insert the 732 probes in too far.

Alternate parts and sources (for RPi and Heatermeter 4.0)

I already had a ton on hand, i think I bought 100 a couple years ago off eBay and still have plenty. Someone check me on this but i think 517-929974-01-36-RK should do, just cut to length.

Can you post pics of both sides of the HM board?

    New start up issues

You could plug the rpi into an ethernet connection and try to get to it at 192.168.200.1 to see if the heatermeter is flashed and reporting back to the rpi. Now that you have just the green LED on, it may be that just the display that isn't working.

When you create the SD card you can't just copy the file to it. You have to unzip the file and extract the img file, then use win32diskimager to write the img to the SD card. Just follow the instructions in the wiki.
