    Attaching a Fan

I kind of like the cardboard, actually. You could always skin the whole thing with your foil tape. If you want metal, have you tried roof flashing? Home Depot has small sheets for about a dollar each and you could probably hand shape them and snip them with utility shears. As for your set temp...

    Post your HeaterMeter graphs

This is from my Weber 22.5" OTG kettle grill. (See my install details here http://tvwbb.com/showthread.php?41158-so-how-are-you-attaching-your-blowe-to-smoker&p=565217#post565217 ) No meat in the grill, although I did use a small water pan and refilled it at each open lid opportunity. I also...

so how are you attaching your blower to the smoker

Installed! Weber OTG Kettle After much hesitation, I finally bit the bullet and mangled my OTG kettle with a hole saw this past weekend. I mostly took Ralph's "airburner" as inspiration. It's a copper water-heater supply line bent to sit right under my Smokenator coal box. I drilled several...

    General 3D Printing Thread

Ralph, I'm moving along on my first 3D printer build project (currently in the packages-on-my-doorstep phase) and am planning to get the E3D, so that's great to hear. As a 3D newbie, do you see any reason I'd be better off with a J-Head? I got some clear advice in another forum to start with...

so how are you attaching your blower to the smoker

Thanks, Ralph! I'm hoping to hook it up and do some test burns this weekend.

so how are you attaching your blower to the smoker

Time to dredge this thread back up ... Specifically I want to ask Ralph, are you still using and/or happy with the 3/4 copper line and distribution system? Anything you'd do different? I flirted briefly with finding a no-drill solution for my Weber OTG kettle, but I'm now thinking I should...

White Wire Ground Fix for LidMode triggering and noise

Wow, seems like this fix is a real cure-all. I got this done and had everything, including the servo, running tonight. The no pit probe connected at low fan speed issue is gone, of course. But I also previously had really flaky power and pit probe connectivity, which I had attributed to...

White Wire Ground Fix for LidMode triggering and noise

Can someone elaborate on cutting the ground plane connections? I don't know that I see shiny lines. Am I just cutting through the top layer in those four directions around the pad?

    Fan Control Cable

From what I've found, it sounds like sending the 12v through the GPIO on pin 2 would have bypassed the fuses and killed it. But I can't tell -- is that how the HM powers the rPi? (EDIT: wait, schematic-reading practice, let me guess -- it uses pin 26?) ref...

    Fan Control Cable

Success! I got the blower running last night. I think I probably didn't seat the wires down in the jack far enough last time. Also jumpered my red led, so it's working now too. I've got the new rPi coming today and a servo tomorrow (yay Amazon Prime).

    Fan Control Cable

John, good point, and I know very well it's probably a good practice to test without the Pi if I'm going to be poking test probes near a 12v lead. Steve, that's very helpful -- thanks.

    Fan Control Cable

I'm awaiting a replacement for my fried Pi, then hopefully will be back where I was, which was having trouble getting the blower to work. What's the basic method for hooking up the fan? I was running an Ethernet cable from the HM to a quick connect cat-5 jack and had the fan wires into that as...

Mine's the same -- under the microscope.

From and for an electronics newbie

I don't know much about circuits, but obviously that connection is running straight through a hot grill, which can't be good for it. Maybe ask the robot to move it?

The LED? I believe so -- long lead at the bottom (+) side.

From and for an electronics newbie

Thanks, Ralph and Bryan. I tried re-imaging and reseating the SD card with no luck. Some Googling tells me that the red rPi led should never blink, it just indicates presence of 3.3v power, although I'll try a different power adapter when I get a chance. But I also learned about tripped...

From and for an electronics newbie

Well then, that'll teach me to be so proud of myself... help. After getting the HM and rPi up and running the other night, I started on blower testing. I had the fan wired into a Cat-5 jack (4 and 5) and that plugged into the HM, but was getting no response. So, I thought I'd just touch the...

    Fan Control Cable

Sounds exactly like me tonight. Especially after I plugged in the probe I found in the back of my kitchen drawer and it immediately registered room temp. Haven't given a minute of thought to blower attachment, but I'm sure to be heading to the depot tomorrow. My newbie question: I'm running off...
