For the vent leaks I'd apply some Aluminum HVAC tape to the outside over the slots. It can removed easily if he want to use the grill for regular grilling. Nice job on the build.

You can order a complete handle assembly from Weber. The part # is 80671.

I checked it out when I built my mini. If I remember correctly, the upper mounting bolts would interfere with the base of the Tamale Pot if I used the stock lower holes. Maybe bending up some new legs to fit would work.
