    EDIMAX wifi adapter dying

Sorry for bringing this thread back up, but I wanted to report back now that the weather is warmer. The very same EDI Max that was not working for me during the winter works just great now that Spring is here. I may be looking at keeping my heatermeter inside next winter after all.

    Sous Vide Setup

Hmm, I like the idea of hooking the fan output up to a relay switch that turns on and off a crockpot as it maintains the set temp. I've got some cheap ebay find digital temp controller that I have used in the past for that, but my Heatermeter would give me a pretty graph. I might have to wire...

    BBQ Weather in Australia

I smoked ribs this weekend during the "arctic surge" mentioned above. It was 19 degrees F for the high on Saturday. I don't understand people that say they don't want to BBQ in the cold, especially if they have a heatermeter or something similar. It doesn't take me very long to get my grill lit...

    config file for on-boot wifi

oh ok, that makes sense. I didn't even have a wifi dongle when I first set mine up.

    config file for on-boot wifi

Am I the only one that my wifi connects automatically? Perhaps I'm missing something here, but when my EDIMAX wifi adapter is working, all I have to do is plug my heatermeter into power and it grabs the wifi and an IP address without me mucking with it. If I want a static IP address I just...

    EDIMAX wifi adapter dying

This week my 3rd EDIMAX from amazon has started to crap out on me, after a couple of weeks of seeing absolutely no moisture, it's still grabbing an IP address, but it won't respond to HTTP requests and ping requests sometimes fail, sometimes respond. I guess I'm giving up on wifi and going to...

    INTRODUCING: the "Roto Damper"

Happy holidays to you too Ralph! Thanks so much for all the work you've put into the RotoDamper and Heatermeter in general. I'll no doubt be using my RD3 to smoke several things between now and the end of the year.

    EDIMAX wifi adapter dying

I'm in southern IL, near St Louis MO, so it gets very humid here as well, and rains a fair amount. I have to say that I quite like that setup you have. I don't have a lot of spare time on my hands this time of year, so for now I was planning to use the gallon size freezer ziplock method like...

    EDIMAX wifi adapter dying

I'm starting to agree with you. I was going to go the route of creating a weatherproof housing for my HM on my Big Green Egg table. But I can totally see why the remote probes is valuable now. Oh well. I will say though that before I had this wifi adapter, I left it out in the elements many...

    EDIMAX wifi adapter dying

I've burned through 2 EDIMAX wifi adapters in about a month. When I first built my HeaterMeter, I had it connected to my network via cat5 because it was easy to run the cable and I had it on hand already. We moved to a new house recently, and it wasn't so easy to run CAT5 to my grill, so I...

    Heatermeter, really well done.

Depends on how deep you go in. I got my HM kit from the website, and as well as my RPi. Then I got a sliding back case and a rotodamper 3 from Ralph, and thermoworks probes. I'm easily over $300 in this project. But I've also got a BBQ controller that wows me every time I use it, even 6 month...

Newbie question - How do I asssure that I have everything to build a HM quickly?

I'm down in St Louis, quickly approaching BBQ in the snow weather, and share your feelings about not really wanting to mess with dampers and such all the time. In fact, I often tell people that if it wasn't for the ease of use of my Big Green Egg, plus a temperature controller (I was previously...

    Using only left button

I too have been thinking about a weatherproof case as my wife and I prepare to move into our new house this weekend. But after seeing your buttons, now I kind of just want to build the whole heatermeter system into my Big Green Egg table and put a row of buttons in. Very cool.

Does it matter where the PIT probe is placed? Not really.

I appreciate this testing Bryan. I have been thinking about running my thermocouple probe to the BGE's built in thermometer, just alligator clipping it to the tip, and leaving it there permanently. I've definitely known that leaving the probe temp in the draft of the fire can cause temp readings...

    Questions before I start

When I first got my HeaterMeter kit, I kicked myself a little bit for ordering the Thermocouple version because I had a bunch of Maverick probes laying around that I had intended to use until they went dead. After assembling my HM, i learned I needed to also buy a new probe. So I placed an order...

    Heads Up

Oh, duh, I should have known that was referencing probe diameter. Thanks for clearing that up. I am tempted to say 7" won't be a problem for me, as I sometimes like to do like Ralph says and stick it through the lid seal, or hang it through the top vent of my Big Green Egg. Though I could see...

    Heads Up

I was going to order me a new thermocouple probe since I screwed up my cheapo amazon one by pulling on the cord. Looks like only specific probes are on sale though. Good deal if you need them. I think I'm stocked up well enough. I will go ahead and order me a thermocouple probe though. I was...

    INTRODUCING: the "Roto Damper"

My concern with the smell of burning starters was less about it getting on my food and more about it permanently being embedded into the ceramic of my Egg. I'm a little paranoid about that after spending so much on my Green Egg and subsequently falling in love with it. But like I said, I think...
