I was never successful with heat on cast aluminum. I drilled them out. Started with a small drill bit such as 1/16" and increased slowly. You just need a steady hand and time. With a thin drill there is a good chance they break if you don't hold the drill very steady.

I was just looking at the brochure and wonder why there is a difference in BTU. I thought the Silver, Gold and Platimun had the same firebox and same burners. But there is a 3,000 BTU difference. Did they use different valves with a bit more throuput on the Gold and Platinum?

Yes they are no longer available. Weber has discontinued them. As far as I know there was never aftermarket part. I think the only option is to find another parts grill or someone here has one left he is willing to sell.
