I know HD and Lowes sell a 16" clay saucer that may work better in 22.5 WSM. Not sure if there is a larger clay saucer out there that is easily available and cost effective without special ordering it.

I eye-balled mine. The top rack is maybe an inch & 1/2 from the top and the second rack is 3-4 inches under that. I'll try to measure it tonight. Just make sure there is enough distance between your heat sync and the lower cooking grate before you drill any holes.

Honestly I have no idea how thick it is. It's heavy and think enough to do the job. Walmart sell the 14" clay saucer for $10. It's worth picking up and trying.

Here's a better picture of the vent mod. I used a 3/8"x8" carriage bolt. Turns out I don't own a drill bit big enough cut a whole that large so it took some prying.

The Tamale Steamer just arrived. I made the charcoal basket last night out of some recycled ESM from a previous bbq project. Can't wait to dive into this mod but it will probably have to wait until tomorrow night when I have the time. I'll be sure to post plenty of pics.
