SJG - Make a Charcoal Grate or not?

Hi Guys! First time posting here and have been reading a ton about converting my SJG into a Mini Smoker and am amazed by the wealth of knowledge!

I've read threads where some guys don't bother using a charcoal ring (not grate as the title says) for the gold version, and others say it's necessary since the vents may clog and not allow enough air to flow into the bottom thus resulting lower heats or poor air circulation. Is that the case and what are others doing?

Sorry in advance if this is a re-post but I search for the exact question and came up short.

I think the best bet with the gold is to attach or place an expanded metal charcoal ring on the stock grate.

i've never heard of anyone not using a coal grate. but some do use a coal ring and some don't.
