Used Charcoal

I've noticed that used charcoal (Kingsford) is much harder to start, but it does not give off the chemical smoke smell as it starts to burn. Once it is burning, it seems fine and lasts about the same time.

About a month ago I started shutting down my vents so I could reuse left over charcoal. Don't know what took me so long try it. I've cut my charcoal consumption by 40-50%.

I haven't had any issues getting used charcoal to start. Put them in the bottom of the chimney, top off with fresh briquettes, drizzle a couple of paper towels with oil, place in the bottom of chimney and light.

On the WSM? I'll just shake out any ashes from the used coal and add lit ovar the top.
Kettle? I usually do indirect, so same way, unless I'm grillin somthin quick than I'll reuse the coals in the chimney.
Don't use the K so no help on that.

I use leftover briqs for grilling burgers, salmon, dogs, etc.

As for my wsm, they don't burn long enough for butt or brisket cooks, or hot enough for rib or chicken cooks.
