TVWGG Hot Dog Taste-Off

For those interested, I did a massive hot dog taste test for The Virtual Weber Gas Grill over six weeks in 2014. Some of the varieties are no longer available, but most are and I doubt the formulas have changed much, except perhaps weight due to shrinkflation!

If you want to check it out, here are the links...get it? The links? Ha, I crack myself up!

So what's your favorite hot dog? Post and let us know.

Here in the mitten, we have Koegels! Made just at the end of the runway at Flint international airport!
Nathans are good, Vienna Beef (Chicago) are great!

In order from best to next to best:
Nathan’s
Sabrett
Kirkland

NO KETCHUP ALLOWED AS A TOPPING
A family of 5, we could not find a hot dog everyone liked- I was a Thumann’s fan.

Kirkland was the one brand everyone could tolerate.

That’s what we buy now and I have grown to like them.

Glad to see my taste buds are not bad as I thought as Ballpark Angus are my favoites and they got a respectable 6th place. Plus they were only 5.1772 points out of first. So not to shabby

Their Jumbo Beef Hot Dogs are one of my favorites!
Have not encountered the Jumbo Hebrew’s as yet here in Costa Rica. We buy these tasty “Hebrews” at our “Costco” type super called “PriceSmart” here in Santa Ana,Costa Rica. They also sell the “Nathan’s and “Kirkland” Brand Franks.

Same thing, just 3 ounces per hot dog.

This may change your opinion of ketchup?
I like ketchup. But I don’t like a sweet hot dog, thus the no ketchup rule. The closest I go is the NYC red hot onions, along with mustard, on a dog.

The red hot onions have a small amount of ketchup, yellow onions, paprika, cayenne, chili flakes, Tabasco, and a pinch of sugar.

The mustard goes on first, then the onions topping. And the dog must be crispy. It needs to snap when you bite into it.

I know. I’m crazy. It’s just a NY thing of how I grew up as a kid. Some habits are hard to break.

:) If you like a dog with a snap in the bite, you would like Caspers. They are made in the Bay Area so I'm not sure if distribution makes it out your way. I guess I'm not a purist because I like more ketchup than mustard on the dog. I do like the ball park versions of the Chicago Dog with all of the fixings, especially the bright green relish!

I wouldn’t call you not a purist. Anything goes on anyone’s dog. Who am I to judge?

My own preference is a 100% all beef dog. I’ve never liked pork dogs or poultry.

I’ll have to see if Casper’s are available locally. I’m betting they are.

Not a hot dog. Way better.
First it taste better .
Second it has a coarser texture and a snap to it.

Hot dogs are gross by comparison. These are awesome.

Always have 1-3 packs in my refrigerator. Easy quick snack or lunch
