Yeah what the heck does it do! I figured maybe you put charcoal around it and pull it and add it lit charcoal in the void?

Weber intends for it to be a charcoal scoop. Pretty useless IMO.
It can also be a dog dish or a modern hat
I once read someone did not remove it from the ash catcher and the hot coals falling into the catcher caused it to melt and make a mess.
