Q breakfast plate

I just bought one of these, actually to use on my Genesis grill.
The surface of the Q plate is quite rough compared to the large Genesis hotplate. If I use a sponge on it, small pieces of sponge will be left on the plate due to the rough texture.
I'm just wondering if this is normal for the Q plate.

Mine is rough as well. I think that is just how they are made.
