Haven't seen any threads about this so I thought I'd share what I did. 
I had some aluminum flashing leftover so I made a deflector to keep the crud off of the lid handle. It also keeps the handle from heating up, too! Just a small lip to wedge under the vent and a quick roll of the deflector to bias it away from the handle. It's really easy to remove if you needed to fer transport or cleaning (which you can tell I haven't cleaned mine at all).
