BBQ IQ110 - Worth It or Not

IQ 120 - WSM 18 - Brisket I used the IQ120 for the first time last night to smoke a 9.5 lb brisket. The WSM18 initially overshot so I closed the top vent, then it undershot. I opened the top vent about 1/4" and set the "FAn SPEEd" to 5 so it would stoke up the coals again and that worked out...

WSM 18.5 cooking grate drops in....

But then you weren't replying to my original post... sorry I butted in. You guys have it all figured out! Again, I dislike settling for second best or products that don't work or fit as advertised. I must have a totally alien WSM 18.5 with these problems after assembly that don't make sense to...

WSM 18.5 cooking grate drops in....

I hate to point out to you good buddy but according to your photo those grate, pan, grate brackets are mounted in the mid section up side down (you had to notice!). The smoker would be unusable assembled in that way....Someone in the store probably witnessed the fact that the cooking grate would...

WSM 18.5 cooking grate drops in....

Things change Chad, so maybe some corners were cut before contemplating the consequences. Tim is correct; this could cause a serious accident like a bad burn or worse: dropping a prime piece of meat!

    Paint or powder coating?

Turns out that the Q's are, in fact, powder coated. Seems the die cast alloy is not pre-prepped with a conversion coating - like Alodine or something similar. This one will get that treatment - another project

WSM 18.5 cooking grate drops in....

Joe, We used the curled up method to smoke them then wrapped them each in foil and just piled them on the grate for the high temperature cook. I need to get some better rib racks since the Weber half round loop ones are not high enough. I went right off the VWB site for the pork spare-ribs and...

WSM 18.5 cooking grate drops in....

Joe and Tim, I have written Weber about this back when I first reported it here. The submission form on the Weber site would not accept the serial number on this WSM so I sent the form as a troubleshooting issue but included the serial number and a detailed explanation of the issue. I was not...

WSM 18.5 cooking grate drops in....

Thanks Joe....so you actually did think I had an 'imaginary' problem.... "I have the bottom grate on top; it's out of round; my mid section was made too large; I don't know what the heck I'm doing, etc., etc....". I though I had explained the problem OK - with substantial factual proof of the...

WSM 18.5 cooking grate drops in....

Watch out, you're in the midst of folks here who own the older WSM's so don't believe we have an issue with this... Weber has lost credibility with me with this issue. Why should we have to straighten up their sloppy workmanship? If we need to put spacers in, then include them in the assembly...

Thought maybe someone here may know - but good advice...

The ID measures 17 7/8" ± 1/16" consistently at 45° increments using two 12" sliding scales. The washers are in there and the grate does not fall through any longer (no thanks to Weber). The lid is also quite truly round and fits the mid section any way it may be placed - no tight spots. I...

    Paint or powder coating?

Anyone know what the coating is on the Q grill base and lid? I seems to be hard like powder coating. I uncovered my Q220 to find much corrosion going on on both the lid and base. (I was setting up to take pictures of the two burner modification that I made to it a few years ago - guess its been...

WSM 18.5 cooking grate drops in....

Thanks Joe....I wish I had a Weber manufactured back when you bought yours. I believe the present grand reputation that Weber has is a carry-over from those days. What we have now is a cost cutter, bottom line, investor interested owner of a once proud manufacturer.

WSM 18.5 cooking grate drops in....

That would be pretty tough to do since these two grates are visibly different diameters. "Let's see, the smaller on goes on top?" Totally impossible but I appreciate the vote of confidence anyhow! Brackets are less than a half inch projecting....ID of middle is 18"....Grill off center against...

WSM 18.5 cooking grate drops in....

Not out of round....The brackets are too short to properly support the grate. If one bracket hits at the outer diameter of the grate ring, very little force will push the center section out of round. This one is round - checked it on assembly. Brackets are too short and need spacers that Weber...

WSM 18.5 cooking grate drops in....

Joe F, If ya 'Bubba' it and miss a support, you best have things balanced toward the supported side 'cause you have a grate suspended by three of four brackets. Woops!

WSM 18.5 cooking grate drops in....

Thanks Chuck! I have measured this center section a number of ways and it is 18" (or just a tad under) but all measurements are the same. I had already done that 'bear hug' adjustment before assembly. Shoot; as long as I can prevent a good piece of cooking matter from dropping into some water...

WSM 18.5 cooking grate drops in....

This cooking grate measures 17 7/16" - right in between. The ID of the center section is right at 18". And it appears that the bend in these brackets leaves 12mm or .473" projecting from each side of the center section ID. So if the brackets were installed as per the assembly directions, the...

WSM 18.5 cooking grate drops in....

This WSM 18.5 seems to have the wrong sized cooking grill because it will drop in to the center section. I came close to dropping a ready-to-smoke brisket a couple of days ago. I caught it somehow...but the smoker was too hot to check for the problem at the time. Evidently I have been lucky with...

    New life for a Q220

Alright - later today... I read about how to post photos here - so must post them elsewhere first.
