Right way to probe brisket?

I've read all the posts about done by feel with brisket....like butter...

If I probe for fork tender, am I probing from the side and into the flat? or straight down into the top of the flat?

Makes a huge difference in feel, of course.
I feel kind of stupid here.

Ahh...don't feel stupid as I spent yesterday doing my first brisket and constantly probing the thing to death from the side. Just learned (thanks to your question) I was doing that all wrong! So thanks for the good question.

I answer questions like this in my head - kinda like a self-study testing and I USUALLY preceed my answer with "Of course, the answer is ...."

This time, OF COURSE, I was ALL WRONG!

I feel so stupid but I'm now, thanks to the OP, less ignorant than I was a moment ago!
