I know there are many theories on this. Here's mine.
I put the grates and water pan in a large leaf/grass bag (without the leaves/grass, of course) and take them to the local self-serve car wash.
I put then on the ground and use the power wand to clean them. Works great! Careful with the water pan. It may blow down the road if you hit it with too much power washer too soon. I cornered mine against a brick wall.
For even more fun, ask your spouse or friend to "Hold" the water pan while you blast it with the Power Washer.
I started on the soap cycle and switched to rinse. If you know of a car wash with hot water? Even better results.
PS... Don't wear you Church clothes. You're gonna get wet!
