feel like I should be on cheaters

I am considering a WSM. I also love my weber summit and grilling. Spent good money for my grill and feel as though it would be shoved to the wayside and neglected when i purchase a WSM. Have any of you felt the same way or do you still enjoy grilling also? I feel like I am cheating and Joey Grecko will be walking around the corner at any moment. I am ready to pull the trigger on a WSM but just need the final shove to do so. I really have no experience with charcoal smoking or grilling. I have only used a cheap electric smoker to smoke fish when I have an abundance, and my grill is propane. No charcoal in my history of cooking. Please kick me to the other side of the fence.. Dave

consider yourself kicked. The WSM is a smoker so you'll still use your grill for grilling. Charcoal imparts a different flavor, get the WSM and you will be hooked.

I have a Genesis, a WSM and a 18" Weber Charcoal grill. I don't use the charcoal grill much but I use my gas grill a lot and I use my WSM when needed - ribs and pork butt primarily. They are so different that you shouldn't worry about not using one because of the other.

Ditto what Greg said... No go buy that WSM and lets see some pics of your cooks.

I have and use both for very different styles of cooking. As the fellas already said: the WSM is a nice cooker but is a very different tool than the Kettle (BBQ vs grilling). It's kinda like a phillips vs a flat tip screwdriver: they're both screwdrivers but used for very diffeent reasons.

Absolutely right! The WSM will not make your grill obsolete....it's just another great tool in your tool box. I love mine.

Different tools

On my deck, I have a WSM, a Genesis gas grill and old Stainless Performer charcoal grill - I use them all.

I like the convenience of gas for chicken breasts or hamburgers - and to glaze ribs. Charcoal is great for wings, whole chickens, turkey, steaks.... - and the WSM for ribs, brisket, pork but - and smoked almonds.

Go for it.

What they all said... Having the WSM won't obsolete any of the others. But then again, you can make a lot of chow on the weekend with the WSM that you won't have a need for the others until later on in the week. At least in our house that's how it works. :D

Having the WSM won't kick your grill to the back burner. What I have found is now I use my grill even more as I strive to make all my sides on the grill while I smoke the main course on the WSM.

Do you have more than one knife in your kitchen? You could peel an apple with a 10" chef's knife, but doesn't it make sense to have a paring knife for that kind of task? (I rest my case. ;) )

As others have said, you will use them all. I've only owned a WSM for about 10 months or so. Never had better better ribs in my life, both from using the wsm and stepping up the game by coming here. Large cuts of meat such as boston butts and brisket, just do much better on the wsm. Now, for items such as steaks, chicken, fish, veggies, I largely do on either the gas grill or charcoal. Just yesterday, I had some bacon wrapped scallops and potato's that I did indirect on the gas grill.....too short of a cook for the wsm, maybe even the kettle, as the time required to cook was about the time to fire up a chimney of charcoal..............So, go for it, I promise you after the first set of ribs, cooked properly, you will not be disappointed, and your wife, if married, will say, dang, why didn't you do this sooner:cool:..........................d

Currently sitting on my patio is a 4 year old Genesis Gas Grill, a little Smokey Joe (going on about 20 years old) and a 1 month old WSM 18.5". This past weekend, I grilled some nice ribeyes on the Genesis and made a big batch of smoked almonds and pumpkin seed on the WSM. The Smokey Joe is now kept mostly for those times when I miss the authentic taste and smell of charcoal grilling. Like others have said, they're all just like tools in a toolbox. You don't need all of them all the time and some are used more than others, but you have them all for a reason.

I took everyones advice and bought a 22.5' wsm.. I got it off craigslist for $300.00. its is less than a year old and is in like new condition. I will be getting it later this week. hopefully i will be cooking on it this weekend.. thanks for the input.

When you get that 'new' wsm, be sure to take the lid off, stick your nose down close and take a good sniff. It should smell like BBQ and smoke. If it smells like lighter fluid or has a pungent smell to it, then I would seriously consider cleaning it back to new and starting over with your own seasoning. You could end up with some funky tasting Q otherwise.
