Cutting Down Ornamental Apple Trees

The city is widening a road near my home and is removing several ornamental apple trees, the kind that bloom attractively and produce olive-sized apples that drop in the Fall.

Is this wood good for BBQing? I think I can score some limbs.

Had a large one in my back yard. When the ice storm took it out a few years ago I cut up some of the limbs for smoking wood. I also have used ornamental cherry. Good stuff!!

"olive-sized apples"? Sounds more like a crabapple tree.

Regardless, it should be fine unless they've been using pesticides on them. In that case, you'd probably want to de-bark them.

Yes. I think they're generally classified as flowering crabs.

Thanks for the tip on pesticide. I wouldn't have thought of that.
