Stoker monitoring with open software and/or Linux

http://www.bbqbuds.com has plotting for stokers (both live and from stoker log output. I haven't done controlling the stoker yet, but it wouldn't be difficult. All you need for the site is your stoker on an external ip or URL, the server polls the stoker for temps every 60 seconds (I might...

Version 2 of my homebrew controller

@bryan I am a pretty seasoned web developer so the site wasn't too big a deal, I used CommunityEngine a free system that adds most of the social networking functionality. Currently the website polls the controller every 60 seconds for data, all that is needed is a public ip address or url for...

Version 2 of my homebrew controller

@Bryan I built a webssite around my home brew, http://www.bbqbuds.com. Basically it stores everything (temps over Time and graphs them) let's you add tags, photos, etc. Your monitor is definitely prettier! James

    analog vs digital control

The homebrew thread describes a Arduino based controller that uses PwM to modulate the fan speed beyond on/off. It works really well. James

Version 2 of my homebrew controller

I also had problems with the radio shack plugs, I got them to work but only really b/c I have a small washer underneath them that backs them off the 2mm needed. Mounted mine in a standard radioshack project box, nothing special, but it all seems to work for me...

Version 2 of my homebrew controller

Bob- I'd recommend uploading the projects to http://www.github.com, so that people can fork the software and use it in a version controlled manner. I'll be happy to do it once you put all the files on your site. James

Version 2 of my homebrew controller

@Bryan Here are some pictures and a blog post about my mounting: http://www.bbqbuds.com/josthei...9-mount-construction I also use the same 12V for the blower and the arduino. James

Tell me about your draft controller

I also use Bob's design, but I did add 4 extra probes to it (instead of just 2 probes, I have 5). I have also wondered about the flapper for preventing air coming through the blower when it is off, but I haven't noticed it being a problem. I am doing a cook right now, and the blower is holding...

    StokerLog on Linux ?

I'd download virtualbox (free) and install windows xp as a virtual machine. When I was running linux that was the easiest thing to do. Virtual machines got to be a hassle so I "hackintoshed" my server (which won't help you for stokerlog, but will help for a lot of programs that run on macs...

So after one bug fix, looks like this thing is working. Here is one of @ctimmer's cooks, that was recorded live... http://www.bbqbuds.com/jostheim/cooks/27 Feel free to try it out... all you need is a stoker with an external url. James

    Whole chicken this weekend

I smoked up a chicken this weekend. Nothing fancy just rubbed down under the skin and smoked it for 2.5 hours. After I pulled I made some smoked chicken nachos, and then threw the carcass in a pot for some smokey chicken stock (first try at that, we'll see). I detailed it all here on my blog...

Okay taking @ctimmer's advice, @MarkMi if you want to turn yours on tomorrow I'll make sure it works with yours too. All I'd need is the external address to your stoker, you can send that to me at james.ostheimer at gmail.com (or direct message if this site has that). James

    Webapp functional...

So I updated my webapp to read stoker data from the stoker directly (from the html status page). All it needs is an externally viewable stoker url, and it will suck down cook data over the interwebs and show it to you (and others) live. I am looking for some folks with a stoker to help me test...

    Stokerlog Version 6

Hi Amir- I was wondering, since you push data to twitter, do you think you could push data to my webapp, for live logging? It would just involve the user entering the url for you to call (I'd supply it to them), and you calling out to that url with your StokerLog format. James (I actually...

    Webapp functional...

To everyone... bugs on stoker upload have been worked out, I just did a simulated run, took the file and uploaded it with no issues. I also made it easier to upload, now you can do it directly while making a new cook (create a new cook directly from your stoker file).

Will do, something does seem weird. Sorry about that, I launched as soon as could perhaps to my detriment.
