WSM 22.5 coating question

I'm noticing some coating that appears to have bubbled off the surface of the lid (inside near rim). I had this same problem with the mid section near the door. It's as if a thin layer of the coating has gotten too hot and begun to peel. When I wipe the area it definitely is the dark coating material. Not widespread but evident. Is this normal?

Yes, it's normal.
I think Chris Allingham calls it carbonized grease.
Same thing happens in my kettles, so I just brush or scrape off the loose stuff.

Just take a ball of aluminum foil and rub it on the inside of the lid. That will take of this kind of gunk and should not remove the seasoning. Main idea is so the crud does not fall on the meat. Nothing to really worry about.

Yep, its not the porcelain enameled coating that's bubbling or peeling, just layers of smoke and grease.
I always bang my lid with the side of my fist to see if any flakes fall out.
If they do I'll flip it over and give it a quick clean.
