Two restored grills - Genesis 1000 and a Genesis Gold

A few months ago I decided to give my Weber Spirit to my Father-in-law and begin the search for a restoration project. I ended up with three grills, a free red head Genesis 2000, a free green head Genesis 1000, and a well cared for Genesis Gold for $75. The 2000 had a frame that was already repaired and really not much use other than some tubing to repair the other two grills at the left side mount. Here are the pics from FB Marketplace.

On the second grill, check the bottom of the frame legs. Sitting sunk down in the turf like that for a long time might have caused some major rust issue. It looks like the propane tank connector on that is also buried in the turf. Also, on the second and third grills, check the cross member on the left hand side of the cook box. It looks like on both there is the rust issue going on.

Good deals on all three grills. That Gold B has the best looking bottom pan I have seen in a long time.

I'd say you have options. You could make one deluxe grill out of the "thousands" (the 1000 plus the 2000), then clean up and sell the Gold. That's what I would do. Actually, I'd probably save both of those thousands and get rid of the gold, but that's because I really like the vintage look of the thousands compared to the stainless. Then again, I like steel belted Coleman coolers too, so this is all simple opinion! You do have a lot of interchangeable parts on those two thousands though, the only real difference is the length of the frame on the 2000. I'm not sure how interchangeable the parts from the Gold are. They are, I'm just not sure how much you can swap around with that one.

Good luck, have fun!

So I decided to make two grills out of these three. On the 1000 I planned to install Grill Grates to make it a hybrid flat top. That plan worked out better than anticipated. More on that later. In the meantime here are some pics of the restoration. I am usually eager to start and don't get many pics, and usually forget when I am deep into a project. You may notice the bent frame on the Gold grill. The prior owner did not register the Gold grill, so after registering I sent a request for some guidance and straightening the base and what to do about the rust in the top. As others have stated Weber did more than I expected, instead of offering suggestions, they just sent a new grill box and cover.

One trick I tried was to take a picture of the label and an angle to see the serial number. It worked, I could not read the label in the picture below at all, but the iPhone camera did a great job.

Here is the complete Genesis Gold. I drilled holes in the bottom tray, and used rust converter on all rusted areas, repaired the mounting tube with parts from the 2000. I coated with insides of the tubes with lanolin to help prevent future rust. New Weber burner tubes, and new flavorizer bars from RCPlanebuyer on eBay. New Grill Grates, these have since been moved to the 1000.

Here is the completed Genesis 1000. I used cedar from the pergola to make new slats. I treated the frame just like the Gold; rust converter on all rusted areas, repaired the mounting tube with parts from the 2000. I coated with insides of the tubes with lanolin to help prevent future rust. New Weber burner tubes, and new flavorizer bars from RCPlanebuyer on eBay. These are the grates that came with the grill, now working in the Gold.

I learned a lot from these forums and hope the viewers enjoy my limited pictures.

LOL, I think Dave in KC might have competition for rehabbing and flipping times.

For getting started late this morning, to digging that green one out of the crust of the Earth, to your incredible same day delivery on grill grates, I am mighty impressed nonetheless!

Very nice job. I would love to see more pics of your grilling area.
Here is another pic of the grilling area before the grills were complete and the Green Egg cart was finished. The pergola was a fun build as well.

Thanks everyone for the comments. It was a fun process and I learned a lot from the member at TVWBB.
