Spare The Air day ribs

I’ve been wanting ribs but the weather here in Sonoma county has been wet.
I got a slab of ribs, got the rub ready, then read - nope - spare the air day.

So I got out my Cameron’s stovetop smoker! Uses saw dust (cherry + Oak) but leaks out little to no smoke and works on the stovetop. Cooks at around 375f so it’s a hot and fast cook.

After 75 minutes:

Then finished on the Spirit gasser for 15 minutes:

Bite thru, juicy, and done in a bit over 90 minutes!

I remember when the spare the air days first started.
There were a few in the heat of the summer on hazy days and that kinda made sense to me.
Then there were more and more spare the air days.
And now apparently in the heart of the winter during in the wet season there are spare the air days.
I can’t help but wonder what the future holds.

Down here (So Cal), we fall under the South Coast Air Management District. There is a definition in their rules that specifically states that, for the purpose of these rules, charcoal is not considered to be wood.

AMD RULES
RULE 445. WOOD-BURNING DEVICES
(c) Definitions
(19) WOOD BASED FUEL

I don't believe our kettles and WSMs are considered 'Wood-Burning Devices', but are considered to be charcoal burning cooking devices.

Might want to check your air quality management district's rules very carefully... ;)

Well dang… I checked and fire used for food are exempt.
I was so proud of my plan B.

What the hey. Good part is I found my indoor smoker!

A few years ago when we started having a lot of wildfires in Northern California, we bought one of those Purple Air devices that monitors outdoor air quality, and it's interesting, informative, and educational to see how air quality goes up and down throughout the year. To Mark's point, the last few days have had an Air Quality Index (AQI) over 100, which is defined as, "Members of sensitive groups may experience health effects with 24 hours of exposure. The general public is less likely to be affected." The cause is a high pressure system sitting over Northern California and not enough wind to blow away the air polution. When the AQI gets up over 200, people really start paying attention. During the 2017 wildfires, the AQI was over 400, which is an emergency condition.

At the end of the day I support the spare the air days. The air where I live here in Petaluma is better because of it.
Chris mentioned the fires we had and I remember how bad that got. I did not use charcoal for many months after and to this day, I check for a STA day before I grill.

I like that CA, for all its current faults, has done a good job of lowering the caca in the air.

and you all live there.....why????:sneaky:
Ask my wife. Born in Midland MI. She says there are only two seasons in MI, "shovel" and "swat". She hated the cold weather, moved to CA in 1983 and never looked back. :)

As for me, my excuse is that I was born here and all but one member of my family lives here, it's great to be close to them, including my 85 year old dad. ❤️
