Smoke wood question

So, I have a couple of dogwood trees that need to come down (both were killed by pine trees that sprouted up nearby and strangled the roots). I'm wondering if it might make good smoke wood. I've never heard of anything being "dogwood smoked", but I suspect it might improve the bark on my pulled pork.

There's an axiom , " if a tree makes a nut , it makes good smoker wood " .

I would say that rules out a dogwood, at least to my knowledge. And almost all smoker wood comes from hardwoods except for the fruitwoods, I don't think dogwood qualifies there either.

EDIT -- dogwood is a hardwood.

I know it also tends to burn pretty hot, so might be better for grilling than smoking.
One guy on the smoking meat forums says he soaks his overnight.
I dunno, I never soaked chunks but he says that's the way to keep it smoldering instead of flaming.
He uses dried out dead wood so maybe that's why?

Might not have been killed by the pines. You are far enough north that your locale may mimic higher elevation southern climes. Look up Dogwood anthracnose. Dogwoods are used to competing with pines and hardwoods for nutrients.
