Questions about 2001 Silver B

Hi
Grill is in very good shape. Picked it up today. Still in car. But while it was on its side I was able to access the info sticker. Serial # starts with DA. Here is one of probably many questions. While on its side I saw the ends of the burner tubes and there is a black hard plastic type cylindrical mesh around where I have seen metal screens on other grills. Do they come off and under them are the metal mesh screens? The burners r in great shape. Should these plastic things b cleaned with a little rubbing alcohol or remove and clean underneath. The only problem with the grill is it won’t light. The owner said you can smell a little gas but won’t light. He was thinking hose/regulator replacement. Will post some pics tomorrow. Thanks. George

Those burners are the very early ones. They had a Weber patented add-on plastic mesh “spider guard.” The more recent burners have that built in but they also seem to be made out of lower grade stainless than the early ones. If you are fortunate maybe you can salvage those.

The plastic is in perfect shape. Do they remove and the air adjustments are underneath or the plastic stays and not removed? I was thinking of rubbing them lightly with a toothbrush and alcohol. George

No lighting can be from a lot of causes. It sounds like it is getting fuel to the burners if you can smell gas, but have you tried lighting it with a match or lighter? The igniter might just be bad and that is an inexpensive and easy fix. Are the holes on the burners all clogged up? Those are some of the main issues with failure to light.

And yes, your grill is a 2001 model according to the DA in the serial number.

Burners are in great shape. It is still in the car so will have a better look tomorrow and try with a flame starter. But the hose looks quite old and grill was seldom used. Will check. I want to resolve the burner screen questions re: the plastic mesh and whether they come off. What else is amazing is that the info paper with serial # etc. looks like it was put on yesterday. No grease or fading etc

There could be bugs or bug nests inside the burners if it was seldom used in the past. The plastic spider guards are supposed to prevent that, but sometimes they still get in and raise heck. Then, I would also consider trying a different tank if none of the suggested fixes work.

Oh, and regarding the information sticker, I suggest you don't try to clean it in the future, or you may find it has "invisible ink". A damp soft rag may work, but no cleaners for sure and nothing rough or that pretty ink will come right off.

Thanks. Will try all your suggestions tomorrow. So the plastic mesh is there in place of the metal mesh as in my previous grills. They stay on and “leave them be”?

Well, they are removable and if the other fixes don't work, then you should probably pull the entire tube out, remove the spider guards and make sure there isn't anything clogging up the burners. The spider guards should snap right back on. Try other fixes first, because removing the burners is more work than the other fixes.

I don't recall the OP indicating the grill doesn't light. Now, OP those plastic pieces ARE the spider guards. They work quite well except for one caveat. If the grill is not cleaned occasionally and it gets a grease inferno those things are the first to melt. If they're not melted it means the grill was cared for reasonably well. Just blow them clean they're also easy to snap off and on. As for the shutter adjustments LEAVE THEM ALONE there is no need to play with them. They don't magically go into maladjustment. Unless of course someone before you messed with them. As long as you have proper gas flow into and out of the manifold no need to touch them and if you don't have proper gas flow fix why you don't. Don't try to "adjust" your way around it

Guess I am getting old. I read and re-read never saw it. Oh well. Haven't really been myself lately. Bad news in family and just a bit unnerved

Thanks, working on other parts then will get into the frame, and underneath. The grate on the bottom has little portions of surface rust, which I think I will Eastwood it, and topcoat.Framing, no rust at all. The rolling casters are seized and won't roll but nothing is broken. I have them soaking in some WD40 and oil. The holders that go into the frame came out easily and no rust around the base of the frame where caster holders go in. I tried a magnet on the grates and no sticking at all, neither on the FB's. I was going to get new grates but I might as well use these, even though they have some burn on on them. here are a few initial pics. Thanks. More pics to come and i am positive, more questions. if any advice can be given, please do. once put together, and on my deck I think I will tape and newspaper off the lid and paint the sides of the box- there is some paint that has peeled off. The color I found out is Mica Green.

There are little push on clips on the back posts inside the lid. Use something very sharp to pry them up like a wood chisel or old knife. They usually break when you try to remove them but they are only about a dime or so at a local HW store or just use some High Temp (Red) Permatex to "glue" it back on. THat is what I do with all my rehabs.

I agree, keep and use the existing grates and flavorizer bars. Or just keep the grates as a backup and buy some quality SS Rod grates.

I ended up removing the plastic burner screens cleaned them from inside and outside with toothbrush and rubbing alcohol. Back up on deck...heat and sun beat me up...Pic of insides...will try to light it later when sun hides behind the trees

I have a very important question. on Tuesday I have a pair of 9mm 304 grates coming for my E330. They might not be able to be returned?? So I was thinking can they be cut to fit the Silver B...Who could cut them? My son's friend has a body shop. Could he do that kind of work? And can someone tell mr what the exact size of each grate should be: L x W. really awaiting answers because I have to think what to do. thanks, again.
BTW I tried starting it with 2 different tanks, and I kinda smelled gas and then I didn't, so I am thinking regulator? George
