Nobody Using Q Grills?

I'm definitely not trying to offend anyone with my dislike for cast iron in a barbecue. I know a lot of people like it a lot. I used to prefer cast iron also

No worries here. Sadly the way the Q series was engineered they're the only thing that works properly. Bruce and I found some 4mm thick SS that is laser cut to mimic the CI ones but the CI still works better

A Genesis 3000 just came up and I'm trying to go pick it up. It's hard not to when the $50 asking price is less than the cover and the propane tank that comes with it. After factoring that in the entire Genesis 3000 is essentially free. Or maybe that's what I tell myself LOL. Anyways I will get one of these Q grills at some point for sure. I think it would be nice to be able to grill on my tailgate while I'm working on x000 grills.

Yah, I would not pay more than $50 for a Q grill unless it was in REALLY good condition. At least that is the market around here. Q rehabs don't do real well either so even if I see a good deal on one, I usually pass.

Exactly why I haven't picked one up yet. Even if it's brand new I'm only looking for an extremely good deal. It's a luxury I could live without but would be fun to play around with if I can get one for the right price.

FWIW here is the link to those made in Germany 304SS grates I could not find before

Josh, I know you are saying you don't like cast iron, but chiming in with some others, they just work so well with the Q grills, and as @LMichaels has noted the cast iron is really part of the engineering of these wonderful grills. I think if you take care of a GOOD set of cast iron grates, you can expect to get 3 or 4 years out of them. Worth it in my book. Give it a try!

As far as which grill, the new 2800 looks really awesome and a great compromise offering power with portability. If you just want a deck grill, then get yourself a used Q320/3200. These have plenty of power as well, the same 2-burner versatility and about as much grilling space as a "classic" Genesis. There are some great deals on these if you keep looking.

Thank you Jon!
I have my eye out.
Most of the used ones I come across need grates replaced because they're rusted and deteriorating. I don't want to end up with it in my family's food. Obviously if it's free or cheap I could buy grates for it though.

Josh,

This Qlimetal cast iron grate would be my first choice for a replacement grate. Not cheap at the current $59, but I have bought this one before and felt it was very good. No shiny coating that easily chips off:

For ten bucks less (with the 5% coupon that shows right now), this one LOOKS to be about the same and has good reviews. I just personally trust Qlimetal above any of the other Asian import grill part companies.

I really like QuliMetal. I have bought a lot of stuff from them and been impressed with the quality. Especially compared to the competitors.

So, if you can find a bombed out Q300 for next to nothing, put a new Qlimetal burner set and grates in it, and maybe have to replace the igniter, the rest is just elbow grease and paint. You will then have a VERY sweet, large size Q grill - new where it needs to be - and bigger than a new Q2800 for a lot less $.

I will definitely keep my eye out and consider my options on different models based on their prices
