Grinding attachment for Hobart slicer

It's the grinding (ie sharpening stones) attachment for a Hobart 1512. Ya, an oldie ('late '40's so 80 years old) but still slices like a champ.

I've got the grinding atttachment for it but the stones are really stiff. I'm assuming they're just gummed up with old grease (no "meat" ever comes in contact as they are used on a clean blade).

The stones come off easily (meant to be changed out when worn) but the "axles" themselves appear to be sealed in for life.

Two questions really:

1)are these stones meant to rotate freely (like really spin) or are they supposed to resist rotation? and

2)if meant to really spin, how to clean inside as the "axles" are not removeable

Strange thing: I was in touch with Hobart Canada and they told me they only deal with business, not individuals !

My Beswood wheels rotate very easily.
I never looked but you would think it has a bearing sleeve of some type.
and you're right: it does. Held in place by what looks like a pin. I somehow doubt that I should "punch" that pin out though.

Here's a close up of that. One side and 180o to that same pin

Not ready to try this yet but: remove the stones (very easy) and let the whole thing soak in very soapy water.

I don't know that that would help (wouldn't hurt) but I don't think it could actually penetrate.
