Genesis 3200 NG Restoration ... wish me luck

I finally got it all disassembled and now finding some issues with rust. Wanted to get some opinions. Not going to get all crazy on this restoration. It’s basically to fix up and donate to the neighborhood or local food banks/churches.

have two areas of rust. First is the common left bar where the box sits. The hole where the screw is shot but the top looks fine. Is it salvageable or should I cut it off and replace? My thoughts are to fix the rust and paint.
Second is the right bar handle where the side burner sits. I was planning on removing the side burner and put a table. Again same thing, repair the rust and paint. The length is shorter but not enough to cause instability.

thoughts?

It depends on what you want out of the grill. It will work fine as is for several years until the rust causes failure at one point or the other. I would at least spray it will a good rust encapsulator, but that is going to add almost as much cost as replacing the pieces. The most critical one is the firebox cross member. Try tapping it with something pointed like a screw driver to see if it punches through other areas. The paint is likely hiding more rust than you can see.

But if you are Leary about putting a lot of money into it, then just clean it up, put it back together and you should get several years more out of it before something fails completely. You could put a brace on the back side of the fire box cross member and that will help keep it strong for a while longer. Something like a 3-4" piece of steel.

Your other option is keep your eyes open for another cheap Genesis X000 grill with a better frame.

That was my plan. Just fix the rust and put it back in. I never really planned on restoring this for monitory gain. Just really to gain knowledge and pass the time.

You asked for wishing good luck. Ok. Good luck following your plan.
Please provide pictures of your upcoming ground up restoration! The "While I'm at" it virus is very contagious. Sometimes the "Weberitus" infection takes hold shortly thereafter.
My plan to avoid infection is to stay at least 100 miles from people like Bruce...

Cheers

Nice! You must have a giant vacuum machine with a Weber filter. I'm looking forward to being able to order parts from your online store. (There might be an idea there!)

Cheers

John, I just pop riveted a piece of pipe strapping over the hole and it has held for the last six months. I plan on replacing the crossbar later when I do a complete rehab.

So put some paint and bolts on. Not as good as others, but pretty proud of how it came together in the mist of balancing work and homeschooling 3 kids. The durawood came faded and burned in some spots. Planning on donating this so focused more on the Fortifying the frame than looks.

Issue that came up was that it had a slide bar for the right table. This grill came as ng and I converted it to propane along with the correct side burner. I don’t think I can add a scale on it as it interferes with slide bar. Or can I?

Whoever you're donating that to is going to be darn lucky to have it - that looks like a great grill. And heck, I'd almost rather it look like that than brand new...don't feel as bad getting it dirty if it doesn't look like it's coming off the showroom floor!

Good question on the right side slide bar. I am sure they made them in an LP version, so not sure how that would work unless they intended the LP tank to be on the inside.

It’s weird with me. Every time I try to do something for monetary gain, it fails. But when I don’t have to worry about it, my creativity level is quite high

looking at the schematic for a 4000, you can use a tank glide wheel. In concept it would work. But in reality I don’t see how. Guess I’ll have to pull off one from my 1000 and find out

Here is the whole manual: I am sure you can figure out how it works. Just keep in mind that you will want the Tank bracket and scale for the propane tank.

It’s going to be tight as it slides past the tank. I’ll report back tomorrow when I pull the bracket and scale off my 1000

I guess it does fit. Lol. Now I need 2 more brackets and scales
