Genesis 2 / Genesis 2022 gas usage question

When I am tired, I am looking at new grills instead of scrolling on my phone. I was wondering how much gas the 3 and 4 burners use compare to my 3 burner spirit.

The long story is my little grill devil is finding excuses for a 4 burner Genesis.

"Sure its big, but you wanted a full-sized griddle insert too. The three burner would be too small for that."

But, its probably a gas hog. Just look at the thing. I can't heat it up just to grill two sausages!

"But you don't anymore. Don't you remember you used the spirit's full area for weeknight menus? And Now we have a son, our little spirit will soon be too small. And besides, the Genesis is insulated. Are you sure our old spirit isn't actually using more gas? One reviewer remarked how hot the Genesis 2 got, even in windy conditions."

Damn you grill devil. So here my question. With just a single burner on full, how hot does a 3 burner Genesis 2 or newer get, how hot does a 4 burner Genesis 2 or newer get at the dome?

My 2016 spirit gets to 150c/300F. I suspect the 3 burner genesis may actually be getting hotter on the same power output, if the double wall and stuff is effective. With one burner on full, I can easily compare the power output of different models, at a temperature range where I find myself using my gas grill.

What’s a little more gas usage mean? You’ll probably have to fill it up one extra time. You know you want the new Genesis. Just let yourself go and buy that bad boy. Consider this your enablement to make the purchase.

If you were running short on cooking area on a spirit, may as well go for a model with the larger cooking area. Fuel consumption is far less concerning (to me) than having ample cooking area. Go for the 4 burner. /end enablement

I don' think the double wall lid vs a single wall lid will make a Genesis much more efficient to counter the larger size and all.

edit: in other words, I think a 4 burner Genesis will burn more fuel for similar heat than a smaller Spirit.

is it significant? Probably not. Will a larger grill bring you more joy in cooking ? You tell us

If you do get a new, or newer Genesis, I highly recommend getting one with with a sear burner. In my opinion a sear burner is a game changer for hot direct cooks.

I have a 2021 Genesis EX-335.
With all burners on high (including sear), I can easily get to 650F. Great for pizza.
I also have the full griddle insert that works as well as any dedicated flattop.

@Mark Foreman that's one part that amazes me, my spirit tops out at 500F. Maybe the later generations with their sear burner close the gap a bit.

And how hot is it with a single burner on?

Because I am kinda missing a big indirect heat area, for 300F-400F range. Basically a big outdoor gas oven. That's where I just need more cooking space.

If you do get a newer 4 burner I'd consider keeping your eye out for a 2017-2022 Genesis ii LX 440 with high+sear on all burners. They don't come up often so the next best in my opinion would be the next model down Genesis ii 435 with one dedicated sear burner from same time frame. In comparison to the newer Genesis SPX 435 I owned the build quality on the older Genesis ii grills was much better.

Here are pics of these two Genesis 4 burner grills I compared. I've compared several others but these are the most relevant to this conversation.

Let me run a test to see how hot with one burner. Ill post the results.

I ran a single burner test on my 2016 E330 when I was comparing NG and LPG Valves. The full thread is here: if anyone wants to read through it.

After 20 mins, single center burner settled in at 275F. outside temp was high 80s.

Note: this was a comparison of valve conversions so to clarify here. This was an un-modified LPG Valve with factory LPG Orifice and an LPG Burner fueled by LPG. I had two pit-temp probes on the warming rack, one centered and one on the right hand side. I had a large griddle on the cooking grates to shield the temp probes from direct heat. The pic shows lid temp and TW smoke temps very close. The 269 degree probe is on the righthand side away from the center burner.

Outside thempeature is 50f. Light breeze. Warmed Genesis up to 300. Shut down all burners but one. After 30 minutes, with nothing inside, the lid thermometer read ~225.

Turned on second burner and waited for 30 minutes. Lid temp was ~250.

Turned all, with sear, and got ~635f.

I cannot comment on fuel usage.

thanks a lot guys.

Makes me rethink the gas grill choice a bit. My hope was I could easily extend my indirect cooking area with a bigger grill. If I need to turn on more burners for the same temp, then I am back at square one.

I am going to fiddle with my spirit, trying to get more indirect heating area from it. I have more opportunities next season. Gotta host a new birthday party :D
