Face Masks recommendations for flying

Don't want to start a debate about face mask VS no face mask....but I am going to be flying later this month and it's a requirement when flying on a plane these days.

Have any of you ordered a washable face mask that you would recommend? I have a few of the standard non-washable ones, but thinking something made of cloth would last longer and be less prone to tearing when stored in my suit case/hotel room.

I found these and they look comfortable. I have a big head....can't even wear snap-back hats, always have to get a big fitted hat. These look like they might be pretty comfortable and with the pull strap you wouldn't have to worry about them falling off. Also looks like it has a built in metal piece near the nose so you can conform it to a better fit with glasses.

Kyle, the masks you linked look like you need to tie both the top and bottom straps......this could be a bit of a nuisance, and it isn't my preference. I also find the ones that loop behind the ears to be uncomfortable (on my ears) for any length of time. One of my clients made up masks that are cloth, and have two elastic bands/straps that go behind the head. Something like this one that I found on Etsy....

You are going to be on a plane sharing the air for several hours. I would skip the cloth masks and get something that affords you real protection. Perhaps a close friend or family member in construction can spare a N95? I had a Harbor Freight N95 from rehabbing my grill. When it gave out, I bought some of these. They meet the European FFP2 standard, which is virtually identical to the US N95 or China KN95. I have a large head and they are comfortable to wear for hours. The company seems legit. The masks don't seem like fakes. After I spilled coffee on one, I cut it open before throwing it away; it had 4 layers.

I have both styles. The elastic over/around my ears is more convenient to put on, but is simply not as comfortable as the tie behind my head style. I'll wear the tie style if I have to wear it for more than 30 minutes to an hour. The tie style is also far more adaptable to head size.

Great thanks for the feedback guys. I have some of the N95 masks, they hand them out at work. Maybe I will wear those while on the plane and get some of the cloth ones to wear around the airport and places that require them, like Costco.

I'll report back after I've got the masks and had a chance to try them on and wear them.

My wife made me a cloth Lions mask. It's good for many situations. But if I absolutely have to been indoors in close proximity to others, I wear the N95.

J, my wife’s son and his buddies would be proud to hear that someone not in Michigan is wearing a Lions mask!

I will always root for the Lions. It's either a mental defect or a character flaw. Even my Lola loves the Lions.

And here's the mask:

I agree with J, the behind the ear ones are great to run in a store for a short time, but not long term. I would go with the N95 for the plane. Better protection!

There is another wrinkle in flying now in many states. You may face mandatory quarantine upon arrival for up to 14 days. Our September trip back to RI is hit with a catch-22. Our trip is one week. Can get a test within 72 hours before arrival or quarantine is mandatory. You can get tested there as well, but here's the catch. Nobody has test results of less than 4-9 days at this point. Asked if we could board our return flight on day 7 and got nothing but crickets from the RIDOH. Have not heard of any elderly non-systematic carriers!

Yeah Dan, we are not heading to RI this summer to visit the in-laws. Hopefully this mess will be behind us by next summer. Good luck in your quest to make it happen. 🤞🏻

I'm friends with a married couple. They are time-share addicts, as in they own more than 6 months worth of time-shares. 😲 Last week, they left for Hawaii. For two months. Hawaii takes this stuff seriously. 2 week quarantine. Hawaii has been arresting and sending home people that break quarantine (including 21 aholes from California). My friends were given a single use key to their condo; if they get locked out, they get a police escort back to the airport or jail, their choice. They have to have all food and supplies delivered to them. I'm hoping they'll still be married after the 14 days.

My mother died in May in Michigan. She lived with my sister. I live in California; my other sister & her kids live in Texas. We were hoping stuff would cool down long enough before a second wave hits (like the curve in Europe) for us to get together for her funeral this summer, but that's not going to happen.

My SiL lives in British Colombia, unlike our southern border, Canada takes this stuff seriously; no one gets in. My Sil could likely come to the US, but then would not be allowed to return to Canada; she's got dual citizenship. My wife and SiL are worried they will never see each other again. Imperial County, CA on the southern border is back to Phase 1. Fewer than 200k people live in Imperial Co. But its two hospitals are overrun and patients are being transferred to other counties. Why? a ton of retiree US expats live in Baja California (Mexico) and the ones that get sick come back to the good ol' USA. It's so bad Mexico is not letting Americans in at the border crossings in Arizona.

This stuff is serious. If anyone feels that their trip can't wait (or a horrible boss will fire you if you won't go), take every precaution you can and then take some more. And respect the quarantine rules of the state you visit.

BTW, RI has done one helluva job:

My condolences on those you have lost during the pandemic. We've lost one friend in MA and had a relative recover pretty well also in MA. RI has done a very good job, but today, the numbers caught up with Gina. Similar to what happened when she was Treasurer and cut retiree benefits including all the teachers in RI. Her investment firm made big bucks with questionable investments with high fees. She had been claiming 20% testing since mid June and in the article you cited she claimed 25%. RI is still ahead of most states but the real rate is somewhere between 16-18%. I wish Nevada could make such a claim, but it can't. We are at 13.67% positivity rate today while RI is at 3.15%. Fatalities have dropped there too since the virus has pretty much run it's course in nursing/assisted living facilities and now safeguards are in place. Weak link is the same I referenced earlier that being getting test results. RI dumped their rapid test since it was about 50% accurate and a bunch of first responders ended up being positive after being cleared with the rapid test. This whole mess is not going to be resolved anytime soon thanks to those ignoring the issue.

Dan, I owe you an apology. I should not have posted what I did as a reply to your post. My intention was to build on what you wrote by sharing my experiences and to vent a little at some mind-boggling stuff going down recently regarding covid. I meant in no way to direct it at you or criticize you, but having read it again this morning, I can see that a reader could take it that way. I was wrong and will edit my post to remove the quote.

Objective facts are so easy for any journalist or engaged citizen/voter/consumer to verify. Do politicians (and businesses for that matter) not understand that? In this case in particular, why would Gov. Raimondo exaggerate? The real numbers are excellent and don't need puffery or exaggeration. It does so much more harm than good.

My condolences on the loss of your friend.

I also prefer the tie on masks. More adjustable and comfortable. I've gotten into the habit of hanging one of these around my neck (like a lanyard using the bottom tie only) in the morning, and then it is there to put up/on throughout the day when I need to. As compared to walking around with something dangling off of one ear.

We bought several packs of these for the family. Has a filter pocket. Pretty sturdy and hold up well to repeated washings. Which is good -- since I think we're going to keep doing this for a long time.

For a plane flight, I'd go N95 and gloves.

J: Absolutely no apology necessary! I'm listening to her presser as I write this. She hasn't addressed the NYTimes analysis of the numbers, but did show some good info in the charts. Number inflation is due to retesting those in nursing/assisted living facilities and staff. Also first responders. I have no problem with this. She did address the crowds at the beaches showing what would happen if they don't follow the guidelines and urged everyone to comply. RI still is doing a good job unlike here in Nevada. Our invisible governor is closing the bars again tonight and threatening pools and gyms since on inspection there has been low compliance. I am a little biased about Raimondo based on her pension reform plan which cut off my 100 year old mother's cost of living adjustment several years ago. She had just gone into a memory care facility and needed the extra bucks. Fortunately her funds lasted until her passing at 103.

This virus is a national crisis not properly addressed. Too much political junk messing with the science. We follow every recommendation available to limit our exposure and would comply with any restrictions any state has. We definitely would be wearing our masks, distancing except on the flights, dining outdoors or takeout, and using plenty of hand sanitizer. Meanwhile, we will be maximizing our Genesis and our Camp Chef smoker as much as possible.

Important subject but getting close to political discussion that we try to avoid on this forum. Thanks for your cooperation.
