Any oil is good enough for a lawnmower as long as it's the same grade. The best time to change it is right after you cut the grass while it's still warm.Cody, for a regular 5hp push mower, you likely won't use but maybe 20oz of oil. No way it is a whole quart. Even if you dump some generic stuff in there, it is probably a lot better than running what is partially oil that is a decade old.
That is a thing with vehicle transmissions for sure. But, I think your motor will be happy with you if you give it some new fresh blood. The superstitious part of me is scared about changing it, now.
I'm not surprised it's still running either. A toro lawnmower is pretty much the best you can buy, especially the older ones. Same with Honda, the older ones are way better than the recent ones. Still, it will probably seize up at some point if you don't change the oil.Oh I’m well aware. I have the proper oil for it that I add. I figure the old stuff is all gone by nowi told my small engine guy about it.
He scolded me, but said he’s not surprised that it’s still running. The superstitious part of me is scared about changing it, now.
I got a Toro too Cody, well, I store it in my garage. Technically it belongs to myself and four or five neighbors who pitched in about twelveI feel guilty now lol. Maybe I’ll change it. Idk if it even takes a quart of oil. When I top it off I feel like it only takes a few ounces.
years ago to share it when we have snow. I changed the oil two years ago and gave it a tune up through a guy in our town who likes to work on snow blowers. Only about three original neighbors are left but we all chipped in for the tune up. I start it up in the winter before it snows just to jog my memory how to use it. We've taught our neighbor's son and teenage friends how to use it and they go around doing about 10 or 15 houses around us for free. I like how the Toro runs, it has a Briggs and Straton engine with a plug-in electric start. Man, it's hard to start it on just the manual pull cord.My old Craftsman snowblower has electric start too, I've never started it with the rope once.I got a Toro too Cody, well, I store it in my garage. That looks like the same motor as the one that I killed on my Ariens. I used the electric start one time when I first purchased it about 15 years ago. Since then, I have always used the rope. One, maybe two pulls. Heck, it started with one pull this fall when I pulled it out of storage.I got a Toro too Cody, well, I store it in my garage. Probably good maintenance on your part. That looks like the same motor as the one that I killed on my Ariens. I used the electric start one time when I first purchased it about 15 years ago. I have plenty lined up already. Doesn't make sense to grab more. I am looking forward to restoring some more. They called it ugly. @Josh Dekubber you must prove them wrong!
You don't want anymore of the long frame models anyway, right?I have plenty lined up already. Doesn't make sense to grab more. I am looking forward to restoring some more.
I know. I know. I was just trying to find your trigger to go get itI have plenty lined up already. Doesn't make sense to grab more. I am looking forward to restoring some more.
I’m with you Larry. Especially when they’ve got nicely done wood on them.I don't get all the disdain for the long frames. I absolutely LOVE those. In my book they're the top of the bunch
