Cracked Weber Genesis Silver C firebox

Hi all,
I’m new to this board, I just picked up a Weber Genesis Silver C for free from my cousin! He even got a brand new lid from Weber under warranty. I was excited to clean her up and get the new lid on, but the pins were tough to get out and ended up cracking the cookbox hinge on one side clean off before I could even realize it was cracked there. I was just wondering if anyone has encountered this, anyway to fix? Needs to be replaced? I provided a picture with where it cracked clean off as well. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Welcome to TVWBB, Marky!
That is a really sad situation, but I am afraid your firebox is toast. I don’t believe there is any repair that can withstand the stress of the grill opening and closing. Fortunately, Silver B/C grills are pretty common. You will just need to wait it out for another good deal to pop up. In the meantime you have a new hood and can get your other parts ready.

The only repair is another firebox. Cast aluminum is brittle like glass. So take it as a lesson learned to never strike anything made of cast aluminum. Take it from someone who knows that pain

I found this grill here, seems to be in good shape, do you know if this model has the same lid or will fit a genesis silver lid? Thanks for your help!

I don't know about lid fitment, but that looks like a natural gas grill.
Oh shoot you’re right haha darn. I think I’m just going to try and find another cheap silver and use the firebox from it as a replacement

Also this looks like a Weber 1000 with the deep firebox. This firebox will not fit into the frame of a Silver. Although the grills look similar there is a slight difference between the x000 models (13 flavorizer bars) and the Silver/Gold models (5 flavorizer bars).

Stefan is correct. The lids would be interchangable, but the cook boxes are not. You need a cook box from a Genesis Silver/Gold B/C grill. They are pretty easy to come by and if you are not in a rush, you should be able to find someone giving a grill away or for just $20 or so.

Larry, does AL becomes even more brittle when there is a lot of heat, heating and cooling cycles ?

Exactly. Plus it is cast aluminum which is more rigid and prone to cracking vs bending

It sure does. When it's "virgin" cast aluminum it's less so but add in heating/cooling, corrosion from the elements (both outside and inside) and it becomes more so. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes all you have to do is give a cross look and it'll shatter

Simliar problem on my 2006 320 Genesis. Cook box hinge area gave way on both sides! I blame the weight of the newer rounded style lid. Anybody ever get a free replacement? This is a real problem, for me at least.

Fairly common problem on those grills. Between the heavy lids and what seems to be a poorly designed cook box with lack of support on that area. I don't know if they fixed it in the later N/S cook boxes, but it was a problem on the sidewinders.

Horray! All is well. Weber replaced the cookbox at no charge. The fine print says cast aluminum parts are covered for 25 years. I should have known that. I also replaced the rusted out bottom floor pan (it traps rainwater), and the igniter.
Tons of elbow grease later, sucker looks brand new! The takeaway - register all your grills!

Go to your local Automotive Store and get one of those small packs of bulb grease and grease the inside of the igniter and it will last longer.
