Butts have gotten expensive

You all haven't seen me on here in awhile, probably a year or so and I haven't done much w/ my bbq but decided this is a good weekend for doing a couple of butts. I was surprised to realize how expensive they've gotten. It was not uncommon for me to find sales at .99 and then 1.29 at other times but those days appear to be gone. Walmart is 2.88, winndixies sale is 2.49 and publix sale is 2.99/lb. The regular price at winn dixie is $3.49/lb, ouch.

oh well, still cooking butts but wondered if that is the new world order on butt pricing
 
We have a local grocer that has them for $1.79 per lb. Usually they are $1.59 per lb. the shortage due to the virus is most likely the culprit.
 
I keep an eye on the "Specials" bin at my local grocery store meat department. They frequently run "buy one, get one free" specials on smaller butts (3-5 lbs) close to the "best by" date. The net cost is about $0.99 to $1.29/lb. When I see them, I load up, vacuum seal then freeze them. Make sure you avoid the "tenderized" products that are as much as 10% injected saline solution.

Side note: Be aware that the "best by" date on most meats is a random date selected by the store or butcher (or their insurance company). There is no law regulating such dates on anything except prescription and OTC medications. Just because a "best by" date is (say) tomorrow, there is no reason that piece of meat isn't good for another week or two. Use the "see and smell" method. If it looks or smells bad, toss it. Otherwise cook it or smoke it and enjoy!
 
Prices can be all over the place. Just returned from the meat market. 2 bone-in pork butts, 18 lbs total for $40.36 ( $ 2.242/lb ). These are Tyson Chairman's Reserve Premium Pork, according to their website ;)
Also picked up a real nice prime IBC 14.65 lb brisket packer for $68.72 ( $4.69/lb ).
Neither the beef nor the pork has been frozen. The brisket has at least 30 days since slaughter, according to the butcher.
As they say.... Trust your Butcher ;)
