Does the s/n denote color of the lid?If we could get the serial number, we likely could find out the secret of this mystery.
So if I type in the model number of my Genesis Gold C it comes back as having a stainless steel lid, which it does obviously.I believe that if you look up the schematic for the serial number, it tells you the lid color in the title.

When I restored the Jack Daniels grill the only parts I used from the original grill were the lid, the grates, and the brown durawood slats. Literally every other part was from one of three other grills. When I did my special Skyline years ago, I asked my wife to post it on her FaceBook account so friends could see what I did. She asked for a "before" picture. I laughed because my Skyline was a fusion of all kinds of parts from various grills.

Thank you, Steve. The uniformity of it seemed unnatural. It's always a little difficult to tell from pictures exactly what's going on, but it definitely looks like some sort of attempt has been made at cleaning the inside of the lid. Hopefully using the razor blade scraper method on what's left will yield a nice shiny porcelain finish. Sometimes most of the carbon buildup comes off in nice sheets of paper like material, sometimes it doesn't.
I think that lid should clean up nicely with simple green and fine steel wool. I'd love to have a crack at fixing that grill up, I'm pretty sure it would come out looking brand new again. She rinsed the dust off the lid with water and dried it for these pics. The lid looks to have the orange peel texture. Some of the white specks under the dust came off. If you look closely there appear to be some loose specks sitting on the top and other surfaces of the lid. They are more concentrated on the right side and also some on the right side end caps and cook box so I’m hoping it’s debris or paint overspray and not fade. Something fixable with 0000 steel wool. She’s offered a refund of my deposit if I decide to pass. Thoughts?

No, I don't see anything unusual there. It just needs to be cleaned properly.Thank you, Steve. The uniformity of it seemed unnatural.
Yeah, that's going to be a fun project. I love working on those, so much easier than a Genesis 1000.I feel much better about it now.
If you were to restore it I have zero doubt it would look brand new.I think that lid should clean up nicely with simple green and fine steel wool. I'd love to have a crack at fixing that grill up, I'm pretty sure it would come out looking brand new again.
No wood!Yeah, that's going to be a fun project. I love working on those, so much easier than a Genesis 1000.
Yeah, I saw some of that too. Sometimes I can blend that stuff in so that I don't have to completely strip down the end caps to repaint them.If you were to restore it I have zero doubt it would look brand new.
There are a few gouges to the metal of both end caps at the handle and I saw another on the right end cap where the front and top planes meet. Visible in the lid photo.
Exactly!No wood!
