Black Gold C

Yah, most of my grills that I rehab and flip are not completely original. If the lid is toast, I just grab one from my stash or another parts grill in my coral. If the shelves are shot, just grab some out of the stash. I have put the plastic Genesis 1000 handles on Silver B's. End hands get replaced quit a bit as well. That was a nice thing about the older weber grills is the common parts between them....even Genesis 1s, 1000s and Silvers share same or similar parts that are interchangeable.

When I did my special Skyline years ago, I asked my wife to post it on her FaceBook account so friends could see what I did. She asked for a "before" picture. I laughed because my Skyline was a fusion of all kinds of parts from various grills.

When I restored the Jack Daniels grill the only parts I used from the original grill were the lid, the grates, and the brown durawood slats. Literally every other part was from one of three other grills. IMG_20250510_043804998.jpg

Something about the interior “grease coating” just seems off to me. It looks so uniformly thick where it’s peeling it reminds me of tarpaper/roofing felt or a spray on truck bedliner. Same with the warming racks. Almost feels artificial. Call me crazy but it’s kinda bugging me.

I believe she just finished using the wire brush (yikes) and scraper on the lid before taking these pictures for me. You can see the lovely scratches left behind.

She rinsed the dust off the lid with water and dried it for these pics. The lid looks to have the orange peel texture. Some of the white specks under the dust came off. If you look closely there appear to be some loose specks sitting on the top and other surfaces of the lid. They are more concentrated on the right side and also some on the right side end caps and cook box so I’m hoping it’s debris or paint overspray and not fade. Something fixable with 0000 steel wool. She’s offered a refund of my deposit if I decide to pass. Thoughts?

It's always a little difficult to tell from pictures exactly what's going on, but it definitely looks like some sort of attempt has been made at cleaning the inside of the lid. Hopefully using the razor blade scraper method on what's left will yield a nice shiny porcelain finish. Sometimes most of the carbon buildup comes off in nice sheets of paper like material, sometimes it doesn't.

Thank you, Steve. The uniformity of it seemed unnatural.

I think that lid should clean up nicely with simple green and fine steel wool. I'd love to have a crack at fixing that grill up, I'm pretty sure it would come out looking brand new again.

If you were to restore it I have zero doubt it would look brand new.

There are a few gouges to the metal of both end caps at the handle and I saw another on the right end cap where the front and top planes meet. Visible in the lid photo.

Yeah, I saw some of that too. Sometimes I can blend that stuff in so that I don't have to completely strip down the end caps to repaint them.
