Beware GBS Grills - possible to buy non-GBS?

It's official. All Genesis II bbqs in the UK and Europe now come with GBS (Gourmet Barbecue System) grates as standard. It is not possible to buy a bbq with a normal pair of cast iron or stainless steel grates. Worse, you cannot even buy these as spare or a second set of grates. They have been removed from the UK/European web sites entirely. For me, GBS is nothing more than a marketing gimmick to sell loads of extra GBS inserts. Beware, if they get away with it in the UK/Europe, the US will be next!

If anyone knows where I can source a Genesis II SE-335 or equivalent in the UK, or if there is anyone willing to ship one to the UK, then please let me know. If not, I will look for something other than Weber, which does not force silly options on customers.

Yah, I personally wouldn't want those kind of grates. There are tons of options for aftermarket grates here in the US and some that are much better than solid rod stainless steel weber grates.
Are you looking for just a set of regular grates, or an entire grill with the regular grates?

I agree those grates look like a marketing ploy. Not something I would be interested in. It seems a waste but I'd buy the grill and chuck those grates in favor of aftermarket stainless grates.

Hey, Bruce. Obviously, it would be easiest to buy one in the UK and import a better set of grates. But, the retail price for a 335 in the UK is £1449, which is north of $1800. That's nearly double the US price and you get these dud grates. You are talking $2k by the time you important the better grates. If I could import a full system with the right spec I expect it would be cheaper.

Have you checked with other manufacturers across Europe if they offer after market grates for these grills? I think there are some in Germany. But with Brexit that might now be a different story. Or are there any UK grill specialists who do offer after market grates?
And yes I am with you. That GBS is nonsense on a gas grill. Just some stupid marketing hype.

The other option might be Napoleon. Yes this is a Weber forum but have you looked at these? They are from a “ fellow” commonwealth country. 😂
