I am working on this Summit D4 which I got a few weeks ago. This one originally came with a smoker box which got lost a long the way by the previous owner. The grill has a dedicated smoker burner on the left side with a perforated flavorizer bar sitting on top.
I now got a Summit smoker box from ebay just to find out that this one was actually made for the older Summit 450 and 650. Part number #9965. It kind of fits but not really good.
The older Summit 450 and 650 seemed to have a different firebox depth than the later D4 and D6. The D4 has the exact same firebox depth as the Genesis Silver/Gold. The grates for the Summit D4 are exactly the same (17-3/8" x 11-3/4") and leave a gap on the left side for a smoker box.
After some more digging I found out that Ereplacementparts has the original smoker box for the "small" price of $350. Talking about highway robbery for a tin box.

So I am trying to find an alternative. The smoker box from the Genesis (Steam-n-chips #9879) I have would be the perfect size if it would not have the triangular cutouts at the bottom to fit over the east-west running flavorizer bars. The summit has the north-south running flavorizer bars. So the box is closed at the bottom.
And I don't think the smoker box for the current Genesis or Summit will fit because the larger firebox depth.
