Aluminum heat shield replacement WSM 18"

I'm at the point of replacing parts with my 18", just ordered a new thermometer, noticed the heat shield at the bottom is cracked at 2 of the three slots where it connects to the legs. $30+ for a new one on amazon, think I'll just cut 3 new slots with the Dremel...?
Maybe I shoulda cleaned the carbon off the thermometer probe?

I'm a relatively new WSM owner, but how did the heat shield crack? Just curious more than anything.

If you can dremel cut new slots, I would. I'm cheap that way.

I really don't think you need it. My 08 WSM never had one.
A grill mat or water heater pan or a oil pan will protect your deck just as good.
