Alpha-Gal Syndrome

Not sure where to post this - so i stuck it in the most popular forum. Feel free to move it elsewhere. As a member of TVWBB, I enjoy all the insight, techniques and recipes for smoking/grilling all types of meat. Particularly BBQ pillars of Meat, Pork and Chicken. I'm a serious BBQ enthusiast. What happens when you can no longer eat Meat and Pork!

I live in the VA and the SouthEast has a growing spread of the Alpha-Gal Syndrome. I was bit by a lone star tick carrying the 'alpha galactose' carbohydrate. I am now allergic to mammals. Yes, all mammals. (That is why i was cooking Gator on my last post).

I spend a lot time outdoors mountain biking and i'm constantly removing ticks. That what makes you strong, has cursed me with this 'bad joke' of a syndrome. Crazy! Now, my other passion for BBQ has been impacted.

I'm curious if other members of the TVWBB community have this same affliction?
If so, any good recipes? i've obviously been killing a lot of yard bird, turkey, fish and shellfish lately.

Any other alpa-gal impacted members? Sound off.

That sucks... we've been getting more Lone Star ticks here lately to go with our deer ticks, a few people got what you have sorta, they can't eat red meat, I think pork was ok but could be wrong.
My friend was bit by a LS tick this summer, ended up needing a pacemaker, and 3 weeks in the hospital.
Ticks are no joke anymore.

Jim,

Sorry to hear about that. Our old neighbor has it - same deal - nothing from any mammal. He even had to be careful with cheese intake. One thing I will tell you (you probably already know) is be careful even when buying chicken or turkey sausages. They sometimes will use pig casing even though the 'stuffing' is poultry. Our old neighbor ended up taking an epi-pen hit one night after some chicken bratwurst. Not pretty.

I don't envy you. I think I could probably give up pork, but I like beef way too much. Turkey is great though, and there are a million things you can do with chicken. Salmon is fantastic on the grill or smoker.

These tick-borne illnesses are getting ridiculous. My wife has been dealing with Ehrlichia (Lyme related) for about 3 years now. Recovery has been steady, but very, very slow. We don't camp or hike anymore because she doesn't want to be in the woods. I don't blame her. Lyme has practically reached epidemic proportions here in N. VA.

I'm going to die of poultry overdose. Turkey chili. Turkey sausage. Turkey bacon. More cluck cluck than usual. Guess I need to budget for more lobster!
