All this talk of building grills inspired me

Larry, this is so cool. Build her tough. Build her steady. And she will give you years of a good cooking experience.

Check this tough monster from my brother-in-law Lees. It is charcoal only. My sister really bummed when I gave him a Thermomaven torch for his charcoal endeavors 20251127_204559.jpg20251127_205141.jpgbut we and the family enjoyed firing a blow torch. I think he will like it with this charcoal beast.

Get big pneumatic tires. Is this a Cessna landing gear?

Go for it Larry!

Here's a little inspiration.....

Weighs about 1,200 lbs, holds 18-20 lbs of charcoal, has 5 cooking racks, each 25"x28". With a HeaterMeter controller on it, it'll run unattended for 12-15 hours or more with a pit temp of 225 F. Fully insulated with 2" of rock wool.

That shot was taken at -6F. Doesn't even melt snow underneath.

I love it. Years ago MANY years ago, my buddy's dad helped him build a go kart with wheels and tires off Cessna landing gear. Big floaty tires. Rode like a dream :D Just that everything seemed so quiet here today I thought I would "spark it up" a bit

That's not a grill that is a battle tank :D

That cranks out some tasty food.

There are at least 2 other folks around here who've built the same smoker. Even with just a ball valve on the air intake, it holds temps awfully well (or so I'm told, I've always ran mine with the HM on it.)

The door weighs a couple of hundred lbs alone. It was all I could do to deadlift it onto a couple of jackstands so I could weld on the hinges. And the door will swing with a single finger. It also makes a delightfully satisfying *THUD* when it closes.

I should say so! Looks wonderful

A couple teasers;

hc_1527088822956.jpghc_1527373750115.jpg

The first one is the firebox getting jigged up for welding. 1/2" plate, welded with something like 0.043 mild steel wire, with a 240v 50a welder set on KILL.

The second is the burn assembly, ash box on the bottom, firebox, then the charcoal chimney on top, with the flue (that goes into the cook chamber) hanging off the side of the firebox. Ash box and charcoal chute are 1/4" plate, and the flue is an 8" C channel. There's around 400 lbs. in this assembly.

A couple of years ago, there was a post on the smoker builder's forum from someone who'd built one of these, used it commercially, and actually burned through the 1/2" firebox.

I envy you guys with welding skills!
Once upon a time I had an old Lincoln Continental that I had the hare brained idea of putting a grill under the (reverse opening) hood, giant cooler in the trunk and a round table in the cabin! I look back now and see that it would have been a serious pain to maintain and move! Dodged a bullet! I couldn’t afFord to keep it, so it got Chevyed off to the scrapyard!
I’ll go to my corner now.
