Ditto what Timothy posted. I did that to both my 18 and 22 WSM as middle section handles. Looks really sharp.
Also, noted in his post the width of the flat stock at 5/8”. My first attempt I tried 3/4 flat stock since it was easier to find. It fit thru where the handle pieces come together fine, but not the plastic keeper tabs inside the handle make it not seat properly to secure the handle pieces. 5/8” width is the way to go if you use Weber handles.

I literally ripped the welded handle off an old Weber Kettle for this purpose. Worked well.
