1989 Genesis 2 Restoration ( I'm so close! )

I actually got the thermapro 2 in 1 for Christmas so I'm set but thanks! I found a drop in for the lid that gets solid reviews for like $10, and I have a set of Bluetooth probes.
The lid thermometer and my own judgement are the only things I've ever relied on. My wife is amazed at my ability to judge the doneness of food both on the grill and in the oven without the aid of an additional thermometer. I don't find it that spectacular myself. I've been cooking long enough now to where it's just a matter of knowing the appliance or grill and paying attention. It's really that simple and I take pride in getting it right almost every time without any additional help. Of course I'm not really doing anything that complicated to where an additional thermometer might come in handy either.

Yep, I can tell chicken and steaks or chops quite easily with no probes or thermometer. Where I use them primarily is monitoring things i.e. slow cooks especially. Brisket, butts, ribs, roasts, or 2 stage cooks (reverse sear). where things can be quite different. I.E. if I have a thick ribeye on. I'll use a probe to monitor so I know when I've hit my very rare mark, then pull to rest, then crank up the heat to get a crust on it. But if I am just doing a straight up cook on the grill (say the Wolf) and not super thick reverse sear, I hit them right on the nose with no probe or instant read. Can tell by the look, the smell, the feel.
My former brother in law (my late sister's husband) used to drive me nuts because he'd be out there with a knife cutting that meat open on the grill to check it. And of course it would be leaking all it's goodness into the grill before he's done. I even bought him a ThermoPro and he never used it ARRRGH!

So I had posted some teaser pics in my introduction yesterday, I've been fortunate to have sime time off work and it's mostly been spent working on this bad boy. I picked this up on NYE and although it was dirty, most everything was in amazingly good shape. This forum and youtube has guided me in getting it to this point.

The original wood was junk, except the handle, so I found the most clear red cedar i couls find at Lowes and tried a method called Shou Sugi Ban, where you torch it, then scrape, sand and stain.

I got the idea from seeing some pics here that a side burner could be added, so I lucked into a free Genesis Silver that is in pretty bad shape, but was able to salvage the frame extensions, a hose and regulator, the working side burner and the drip pan that clips onto the grease tray.

Only thing left is to figure out how to rebuild the fold out table. I believe I have all the pieces but I'm not quite sure how the rod attaches when its extended.

Anyway, this has been a blast and thank you all again, even if I didn't comment, I read a ton of restoration threads on here while the process was going. So, what should the christening meal be on this thing!?
Excellent job, love the table extension off the side burner, did you find a cover that fits? I would like to add the table as well and have plenty of spare parts for this style grill but would need a cover to fit. I bought mine new years ago. I restored it a few years back and still looks great and cooks wonderfully. I have many Weber grills and this is definitely my favorite one and will never part with it. 20230916_183532.jpg1.jpg3.jpg

I agree with @Steve Hoch and can judge most cook times and temps very easily without keeping track. But... Recently did my fist batch of Smoked Salmon and its quite a process but we'll worth the effort and it turned out fantastic. I used a Weber instant read thermometer which worked but wasn't good because I let the heat out of the smoker to check internal temps so Im definitely going to make many more batches of smoked Salmon and I want to utilize probs and readout at the grill and on an app. Weber makes a Weber Connect with probs and app. Is this a good option or is there something better that I should consider?? Should I ask somewhere else?

Thermo Pro has several on sale on Amazon. Any thoughts or experience?

Don't hesitate. IMO best bang for the buck you can find. Speed and accuracy like the expensive brand at half or less the cost. Fantastic support as well if it should ever be needed. Top notch company IMO

Thanks Larry! I was just reading your rant on another thread about Bluetooth vs WiFi

Thats super cool! I think I'm just not going to fasten the frame extensions and remove them when I cover it. The spot i have i should be able to leave it like it is most the time. Love the badge!

not so much a "rant" but IMO Bluetooth is useless as a tech for "remote" stuff as range is never what they claim it to be. I.E. I have TPro Bluetooth wireless probes. Near useless more than 10' away. Gimme WIFI all day every day. At least it "works' and I know I can also leave my house if needed

Thanks Larry I'll keep that in mind while I continue shopping!

That is a beauty Albert, I wouldn't part with it either. I really like your deck too!

Josh, here is some chatter about the ThermoPro Lightning compared to the Thermapen One. Both are excellent, just very different. Then there is the Apple/Google looking Typhur which is also very nice.

You may be able to buy some 1/4” pins with detents to make them quick release. Something like this (obviously not 2”).

While the ThermoWorks might equate to a Lexus I'd more put the Lightning as a "Camry". Get the same job done every bit as well as the Lexus for far less $$$ and the lesser ThermoPro models I'd call those "Corolla" a little more basic but still every bit as reliable

@Jon Tofte I have an instant read digital thermometer. I need probs so I don't have to open the grill and let the heat out to check internal temps. I don't normally need a thermometer for anything but now that I'm smoking salmon I need to hit accurate temps.

There is a new version of Chef IQ out and IIRC Costco has it for $79. I had trouble with my first one, they FINALLY came through and sent me a new one (old version). I bought a new version as well but it's still in it's box. I also bought the Govee one but honestly it does not perform nearly as well as Chef IQ or even the ThermoPro Bluetooth one. So it sits stuck to my fridge unused. Likely I will pull out the new version of Chef IQ once we get into weather more conducive to smoking some Q

I love the thermopro TempSpike. I find the price to performance ratio really good. It is especially great for rotisserie as it is wireless.
