1989 Genesis 2 Restoration ( I'm so close! )

So I had posted some teaser pics in my introduction yesterday, I've been fortunate to have sime time off work and it's mostly been spent working on this bad boy. I picked this up on NYE and although it was dirty, most everything was in amazingly good shape. This forum and youtube has guided me in getting it to this point.

The original wood was junk, except the handle, so I found the most clear red cedar i couls find at Lowes and tried a method called Shou Sugi Ban, where you torch it, then scrape, sand and stain.

I got the idea from seeing some pics here that a side burner could be added, so I lucked into a free Genesis Silver that is in pretty bad shape, but was able to salvage the frame extensions, a hose and regulator, the working side burner and the drip pan that clips onto the grease tray.

Only thing left is to figure out how to rebuild the fold out table. I believe I have all the pieces but I'm not quite sure how the rod attaches when its extended.

Anyway, this has been a blast and thank you all again, even if I didn't comment, I read a ton of restoration threads on here while the process was going. So, what should the christening meal be on this thing!?

I'm a little surprised that the side burner fits and you were able to hook it up to that manifold, most of the side burners from the Silver/Gold /Platinum grills have a quick connect fitting on the hose. It's looking good, but you didn't do the inside of the lid😉IMG_20240610_193242197.jpg

Lol, yeah I definitely ran out of patience in a few areas! Believe me, scraping, soaking, steel wool was done but some of this old carbon seems bonded to it! The side burner from the silver does have a qc, but the threads that is attached to matched up with the manifold I had, which had a plug for what i would imagine would be the first gen side burner. Big yellow flame though so something isn't quite right. If it affects the performance of the grill burners I'll just plug it again and figure it out down the road.

Could that side burner have come off of a natural gas grill? That would explain the big flame.

I saw the flame and didn't pay attention. Two things could explain the strange pattern. One it's a NG unit running on LP or 2 the venturi tube has an insect nest in it not allowing proper mix of ai and fuel.
That looks to be a Genesis 2 BTW not a 2000 as I don't see casters on left side.
Nice looker though. Good work there

That is looking REAL nice! It is definitely a 2! The burn and scrape method added a lot of character to the wood!

One suggestion I would have, is to reach out to @Steve Hoch to get some of his whitewall inserts. That would be a really nice finishing touch on that beauty!
I plan on it w the wheels! The donor grill l had looked good, but they literally crumbled to powder when I touched them

Something is definitely off with it, I can see by your picture that it's not even turned up to high. The flame should look more like this.View attachment 124106
Boom! You were correct sir, the screen and burner tube we chalk full of critters, egg sacs and mud nests, long straw cleaner ftw! Thanks! Can you msg me or link to the white walls?

Alright gang, here she is in the light of day with the functional side burner, extended frame table and fold out table attached! I'm thinking some bone-in skin-on chicken thighs for the first cook to get some good grease and seasoning going. Still need a new thermometer, white walls, stainless grates, warming rack, maybe a wood chip box, griddle, rotisserie 🤣...what else am I missing!?

I am with Bruce. If you haven't done so yet, check out the Weber parts deals thread. Many good links in there for some quality parts. Given they may not be on super sales currently but a good selection of well reviewed items in there. Even the 9mm grates that were posted for $40, are a good buy for a keep grill at regular price.

I am a fan of the era correct smoker box... there are a few more on there than just this one.

Joseph, thanks for sharing your grill restoration. It looks fantastic! I really like how the wood turned out, the grain and finish look beautiful. You did a whole lot in a short period of time! I also like the right shelf next to the retrofitted side burner. I bought some nice 9mm grates that I was alerted to in the "parts deals" thread Bruce mentioned that were really nice for $40. They are up to $89 now but you will find that these aftermarket Weber parts prices fluctuat a whole lot. The alerts on the thread catches the lows for big savings. Enjoy your first barbecuing!

Here are some possibilities from a myriad of choices for instant read thermometers.

This one is inexpensive and looks exactly like one I bought just to try it out. It wound up being a keeper that I use quite a lot. Great display and fast temp read. All the reviewers seem to agree!

This one is more expensive but very ruggedly built. It gets good reviews from members here including me!

I will add to that second choice Val. Been using one since they first came out. Paint is all wore off, I've abused it literally any way I can imagine. Yet it's even still on it's first battery! I don't think you will find better even at twice the price or more

I actually got the thermapro 2 in 1 for Christmas so I'm set but thanks! I found a drop in for the lid that gets solid reviews for like $10, and I have a set of Bluetooth probes.
