No, I had not heard that. But then why did you strip yours down to bare metal?
 
I guess I personally wouldn't worry much about it. What does a new one look like? Is it precoated in carbonized beef or something else? Like someone else said in another thread: "Just super cook a cheap piece of beef in it before you use it for cooking food to eat"
 
Have never heard about it either, and can't say that I would believe it. Take it to bare metal, spray with some PAM or put some cooking oil on a paper towel and give the surface a thin coat. Then turn the grill on and crank up the heat to "season" it.
 
I just lubed up the manifold valves on my Genny 1000 following Dave's how to video which was based on directions from LMichaels. I had one that would stick most of the time and not turn at all. The other two just didn't turn easily. After the lube, they all work great and smooth. Thanks.

Looks like you have a great grill to work with. Hopefully, you can rescue that drop down swing table.

Mark: RCPlanebuyer is a guy that sells very high quality Stainless Steel replacement parts for Weber grills, to include cooking grates, flavorizer bars, heat sheilds as well as other parts. They are much better than any of the aftermarket Stainless parts and even significantly better quality than real Weber replacement parts. He uses only 304 stainless steel which is the best as well.

Hello Everyone
First post. I love this site! I especially love how everyone provides input. It's funny how I fell in love with this 1100. I have a Performer and a E330P Genesis, but this 1100 looks so beautiful when restored.
I just read through this thread and it has empowered me to do a restore on a 90's Genesis 1100 (Red). Can you please review my plans and advise me if any of this can be done better or different?

Dismantle everything. ! was able to get the firebox bolt off!
Wash and degrease the exterior and inside the firebox (if I use brake cleaner or oven cleaner for the exterior frame, inside the firebox, exterior firebox and the exterior lid, will it ruin the red top?)
Do I need to sand the frame before painting? (there's not much rust..just a little in the joints)
Paint with RustOleum High heat (semi gloss for frame and flat for the cookbox and end caps)
How many coats of paint do you suggest?

Oven cleaner for the cook box. Just scrub down the frame with a scotchbrite scrubby and some good cleaner. Then wipe it down with some rubbing alcohol or a solvent like XLOL and probably spray the light rust at the joints with some Rustoleum rust reformer and then paint. I would suggest using High heat paint like rustoleum high heat ultra on the frame where it is close to the cookbox and you can use regular spray paint else where on the frame.

The lid is ceramic. Clean the outside with #0000 steel wool and a good cleaner. I like to use Simple Green. But, you could use oven cleaner if you like.

I would use flat for the cook box and semi gloss for the end caps. Three or more coats on the cook box and end caps. Two or three for the frame.

I have found that the inside of the frame is rusting and my finger can punch through certain parts of the grill. I am looking for a new frame. I see a lot of weber genesis 1000s available (I assume the difference between the 1100 and the 1000 is the wire under the cookbox instead of wood). Can I use 1000 frames to replace my 1100 frame? I just did not know if there were different screws that hold up the wood vs the wire under the cook box.
