Hey everyone,
Long time lurker, first time poster. I'm starting this thread to catalog the build of my WSM cart for my 18.5" smoker. I love the WSM itself, but am constantly plagued with lack of storage for my extra charcoal, chimney etc between smokes. My wife would also like me to stop using our brand new firepit as a place to wrap my Brisket (haha), so a table top is a must. I can't take any credit for this idea, as I stole it from "SWright" (https://tvwbb.com/showthread.php?77580-Rolling-Cart-for-WSM)
I plan on doing a similar setup as him using a Harbor Freight cart I bought for $60. I have built up a frame using 1x4" common boards which I plan to stain and urethane once I decide on what I want to do with the top. I thought about ditching the metal top completely and just securing the boards to the vertical supports directly, but settled on keeping it as it provides a nice base for the table top I'm going to build. I used sheet metal screws from the inside to bite into both the metal frame and the wood underneath. In the second photo, the tape measure is set to the diameter of the cut I'm going to make; this should leave about 2.5' of table top for working space.
As for the top, I'm going to cut a 20" hole in the metal, and probably a slightly larger 21" hole in the top above it. Like SWright, I'm going to offset the smoker to one side to give ample storage underneath. The biggest unknown so far is what I want to do for the table top. I've narrowed it down to a top of eastern red cedar with a thick coat of urethane, or small/mosaic tiles. I really like the tile idea, but would have to build out extra support for the backer board where the frame overhangs away from the cart. Would be open to any suggestions here!
I'll keep updating this thread as the build continues!
