Smoke issue

So I smoked some ribs in my kamado Joe yesterday and kept noticing no smoke coming out of the top. I used 4 chunks of apple wood and there was smoke rolling when I put the ribs on. My heatermeter was attached and the rotodamper was open around 50%. This is the second or third time I've noticed this. When I left my lid own to wrap the ribs it started smoking good. Any ideas why the lack of smoke?

I wouldn't think that the manner in which the damper is controlled would change the amount of smoke generated. If the fan gets going really good and overstokes the fire, you'll see a higher volume of smoke. Generally though, you should not see anything but the finest wisps coming out of the smoker during a cook.

Im familiar with the thin blue smoke, but there was nothing coming out. I was just wondering if there was not enough airflow to smolder the wood
