How much rust is too much?

Just picked up a curbside Weber Performer 2002 DU model. Went to go clean it and noticed heavy rust inside the bowl (chipped away porcelain, sort of looks like craters) and inside the lid. However, it has not rusted through anywhere. If it’s assumed I keep it dry from this point forward is the kettle still salvageable? Thoughts? Thanks!

Nice save!
Give it a good coat of oil and season it like a CC pan.
You should get many more years.

By "picked up a curbside...", I presume that means you got it for free ? That being the case, money well spent ! :)

Get it gunked up quick. You could coat with oil, or just grill some really fatty ground chuck burgers. Be sure to move them all around the grate to drip everywhere.
