Drilling into WSM?

That is the type of bit people recommend. I’m not sure how big you need to go for a vent hole, but it looks like the larger one of the bits in your link will work. You might save some money if you just buy one bit. Also, when drilling through the WSM, you will be drilling through enamel. I’m not sure exactly what it is, but it will react like a coat of thin glass. Get some of that blue painters tape and tape the area to be drilled. It will minimize the chipping. Then, make sure you coat the bare metal with something to keep it from rusting.

I've used the Irwin Unibit #4 to drill holes in the WSM lid. The kit you're considering should do the job, too.

You can see an example of the kind of hole a step bit will make in this article: http://virtualweberbullet.com/installing-thermometer.html#stock

There will be roughness, chipping, and possible sharp edges from penetrating the porcelain enamel finish. Take care with your fingers around the hole(s).

My experience is that it takes some effort to get the step bit to initially penetrate the metal, so if you've got a really good regular drill bit you can make a starter hole then switch to the step bit. Also, I remember the step bit getting quite hot as I worked up to the 3/4" size hole I was drilling, so a few squirts of lubricant like 3-in-1 oil might help.

Good luck!

If you can I would avoid doing a center punch. The impact of the auto punch will shatter the enamel and could crack it out farther than the hole your drilling. Chances are it will all be covered up by the new daisy wheel and a after a few cooks it will be covered in seasoning so you wouldn't really have to worry about it rusting anyway.

Kind like car glass. Here is a video so you can see its affect.
