Is there a temperature difference between the upper and lower grates when smoking food? If so what is the temperature difference between them?

Yes, it can vary depending on what you're cooking, how much meat, meat temp, cooker temp, etc. It's a very dynamic environment. But this article gives you some info:

I agree with the info Chris provided. Getting to know the temperature differences between the racks in your WSM is all part of knowing your smoker. I have used the difference many times when the items I am smoking are of different sizes or for other reasons cook at different rates.

ROFLOL In more than ten years, I've never used the lower rack. My grate still looks brand new!
